Review

'Another fast, action-packed thriller form the former head of MI5 ... the quality of her writing is still very high and you know that you are going to have a very exciting read with her entertaining stories ... the author did work for MI5 in Northern Ireland during her career and it adds an authenticity which is hard to ignore.' -- Euro Crime. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

MI5 officer Liz Carlyle is posted to Northern Ireland. From the moment she lands in Belfast, danger follows. She soon discovers that the peace process in the province is precarious. Then a source reports strange goings-on at a house on the Irish Sea owned by the Fraternity, an organisation Liz suspects of being a front for renegade former IRA men. Its head is Seamus Piggott, an Irish-American with a gun-running past. When another informant reports a plot is being hatched against the security forces, Liz and her colleague Dave Armstrong suspect Piggott is involved, along with a former French Intelligence officer. Moving from London to Belfast to the South of France, the latest Stella Rimington Liz Carlyle novel is a propulsive thriller filled with action and nail-biting suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Le Carre, Sep 11 2011
This review is from: Present Danger (Paperback)
Not Le Carre but a good read.
There is quite a difference between the 'mans' spook & the female spook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alas, not the one where Liz and Charles at last get together. But a stellar Stella Rimington thriller nonetheless., Mar 27 2012
By Sharon Isch - Published on Amazon.com
Turns out the mutual attraction between MI5's formidable Liz Carlyle and her boss, Charles Weatherby, that has never been acted upon, and that Liz--and probably also Charles--thought no one else had noticed, has indeed been noticed. By just about everyone. And now that Charles is a widower, British Security Services higher ups decide it's time to thwart what could turn out to be a problem before it becomes "A Problem." Their solution: Get Liz out of London for awhile.

So off she goes to the Northern Ireland headquarters of MI5 to head its agent-running section and work to keep the peace process peaceful by thwarting the plots and schemes of those dedicated to keeping the war going. Of particular interest is a group known as the Fraternity that's attracting a lot of former Provisionals and is headed by a recently imported Irish-American with an oversized and dangerous chip on his shoulders. That's how this fifth novel in the Liz Carlyle series starts. It ends with a real nail-biter of a complex and scary rescue operation.

As thrillers go, I found this 5th in ex MI5 Director Stella Rimington's "Liz Carlyle" series particularly thrilling, But my very favorite part came at the very end--with a last sentence I find more than a tad reminiscent of Rhett Butler's famous "Frankly, Scarlett..." line. Well worth arriving at after all the breath catching that precedes it.

Here are the series titles so far, in chronological order: 1. At Risk, 2. Secret Asset, 3. Illegal Action, 4. Dead Line, 5. Present Danger 6. Rip Tide, 7. The Geneva Trap (due out 10/2/12)

5.0 out of 5 stars World of spies, Jun 8 2011

This review is from: Present Danger (Hardcover)
Iam a big fan of Stella Rimington and Liz Carlyle. Present Danger is #5 in the series. Liz has a job that is not filled with glamour but there is alot of excitment and plenty of spies and danger. The writing is sharpe and keeps the action moving.
