Book Description

Our country works well in practice, but not in theory. -Josh Freed Five long years of laugh deprivation have ended. At last, a new book from Josh Freed, winner of the 1995 Stephen Leacock Award for Humour for Fear of Frying and Other Fax of Life. Josh Freed should be considered a national treasure - an award-winning author, filmmaker, and journalist, he works in every medium but the hammer and chisel. He has directed and written documentary films for over 15 years and is the author of several best-selling books. According to Freed, the push button telephone is a metaphor for a world that offers a bewildering number of choices. But unfortunately we don't choose the choices, "they" do!

Some of the topics covered in Press 1 and Pray include: Breaking Out of Voice Jail, Confessions of a Fashion Hop, The Menace of Home Groan Vegetables, Joining Life's Last-Minute Club, In Praise of the 25-Hour Day, Cross-border Shopping - Gas and Bypass and Extreme Poutine - Notes from Quebec, the Official Smoking Section of Canada

In 1999 he edited, with Terry Mosher (Aislin), 2000 Reasons to Hate the Millenium: A 21st Century Survival Guide. Freed's recent documentaries include Polar Bear Safari (CBC and Channel 4, UK), Coat of Many Countries which was broadcast in 10 countries, and Merchandising Murder: The O.J. Simpson Industry, which won the New York Film Festival World Medal.
