If you already know Preston Sturges, you don't need me to tell you to buy this set. If you don't know Sturges, this is an unbeatable opportunity to experience Hollywood's best-ever comedy director (okay, Buster Keaton might give him a run for his money). His movies are smart, subversive, screamingly funny, and as fresh as the day they were made. Capra? Chaplin? Hawks? Geniuses, perhaps, but they can't touch Sturges.

Okay, so the collection's missing one crown jewel -- "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" -- but you can order that DVD separately (it's cheap, and available on Amazon). I've been waiting years for the release of "Hail the Conquering Hero" and "Christmas in July," and the other movies in the set are equally essential viewing. The one oddity is "The Great Moment" -- a rare Sturges drama. I haven't watched it yet, but I'm curious to see it.

Even if "The Great Moment" turns out to be a dog, you still get six of the greatest comedies ever made, at less than ten bucks a disk. What are you waiting for? Order this set already!

These are among the most sophisticated, smart-aleck, boisterous and just plain entertaining films that I have the pleasure to see. Sturges was a unique visionary from his times and had a way with a script and its filming that made him a top-drawer movie icon . He could tell a straight tale with just that hint of larceny that made you giggle and yet could come about and do a romantic scene that made you grin. If I bought the last copy of this little set of gems I hope you get more so that Everybody can have a peek at what a real genius could do in the earlies. Thank you!
