Product Description

From Amazon.com

The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly is the Bomb, Dec 22 2003

This review is from: Pretty in Pink (VHS Tape)
Molly Ringwald is pregnant! Hard to believe, since I can't get the 5'0, 100# or so image of her out of my head. I have watched this movie so many times, I could probably recite it backwards. It worked so perfectly for me as a high school student, ridden with the usual teenage angst. Molly (or Andie, as she is called in the movie) lives with her father, and they don't have a lot of money. She falls for Andrew McCarthy ("Blaine") who "drives a BMW!" Her best friend Jon Cryer (Duckie) is also un-wealthy and is totally in love with Andie. She sees him only as a friend. Duckie is quite upset when he finds out that Andie and Blaine end up falling for each other. Tensions mount as Andie suspects that Blaine is uncomfortable with her lack of wealth. Andie finds out that Blaine asked "someone else" to the prom! Andie decides to go to the prom on her own, and meets Duckie there. Her, Blaine, and Duckie all make amends at the prom, and live happily ever after. No, the plot is not deeply intellectual, spiritual, or otherwise thought-provoking but it leaves one with a feeling of, "you go, you unpopular, unwealthy girl!" Jon Cryer also provides a stellar performance as the guy that got turned down, along with Andrew McCarthy as the guy that realized that with true love, financial status is no issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Since you'll read all the spoilers anyway, April 11 2004

I'll go ahead and allude to the ending. All that needs to be said: What the hell? Duckie had SO much more personality than that drip Blane. His sense of humor was the best. Crappy ending will leave you somewhat disappointed and that's why I knocked off a star.

Besides that -- this is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's cute, sweet, cheesy, funny, and touching. The music, the clothes, the actors, all great. Jon Cryer and Annie Potts make the movie, without them it wouldn't be what it was.

Just go see it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic....oh Boy!, Jun 18 2011
By
Ok...when you start hearing about this movies being a classic. We are getting old y'all. Classics where the black and whites when we where growing up. This movie I regret to say is a classic and an 80's staple of what 80's movies where and no there is nothing like it. I love this movie because it pushed the envelope without being completely disrespectful and it showed the struggles of the lower class compared to the upper. Remember the days when our fashion were our own creations. We now display someone elses fashions and at a costly expense. The 80's there was nothing like it. This movie is the 80's. Watch this movie and time travel to the good old days.
