Product Description

The Emmy-winning crime series seen on PBS "A perfect marriage of astoundingly talented actress and brilliantly conceived character" --USA Today "Riveting" --The Boston Globe Oscar winner Helen Mirren is Detective Jane Tennison, "one of the great character creations of our time" (The Washington Post), in a series that won more than 20 major international awards and raised the bar for police dramas. Tenacious, driven, and deeply flawed, Tennison rises through the ranks of Britain's Metropolitan Police, solving horrific crimes while battling office sexism and her own demons. "Rare is the drama that works so well on two levels: as a crackling whodunit and as a finely tuned character study of a strong but insecure woman trying to prove herself in a man's world" (Time). Seen on Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! and created by crime writer Lynda La Plante, Prime Suspect features some of Britain's biggest stars, including Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton), Zoë Wanamaker (Poirot), David Thewlis (Harry Potter), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Ciarán Hinds (Jane Eyre), Tom Bell (Reilly: Ace of Spies), and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting). Contains coarse language and graphic content

Quality exceeded my expectations. I thought it might be letter-box format but is was in full wide screen. Loved the subtitles option, because even though it's a British production, it's sometimes easy to miss some the dialogue.

Gritty, believable, fast paced, intriguing if not likeable characters. This is police drama at its best. It's not only better than anything on t.v. this millenia so far (and I'm not exagerating), but it's almost better than the original Law & Order series.
I've watched a lot of British crime dramas and I tend to like the way they are shot overall, with a lot of attention to the people, settings and stories being as realistic as possible down to the `foggy' lighting, lack of makeup, etc.
Helen Mirren is unbelievably talented and really, the ability of the rest of the cast is so top notch.
I watched this series on DVD, 15 years after I saw it originally, and I don't have much to compare the quality with, so all I'll say is that maybe if you don't know any better, like me, you will think this 7 disc set is perfect.
I'm only on disc 4 of the 7 and if I don't pace myself better, I will run out of episodes to watch and have nothing to look forward to. I believe though that I will be satisfied with watching them all over again.
Do I have anything negative to say? Sometimes the characters sobby ramblings are a little too melodramatic ie: Susan Covington's manic break down at the end of the episode. A little too much craze perhaps.
Interesting note: Tennison has a cell phone and I noticed what looked to be a lap top in the background. I didn't realize that that technology has been around that long.

First of all, if you love British mysteries, this is probably one of the top three ever made. Different people may argue which is best and I will leave them to it. The other two are the Morse/Endeavour series and the Touch of Frost mysteries.

Helen Mirren is absolutely perfection in this role as Jane Tennison. She plays a hard-as-nails detective fighting her way to the top and up and down and up again. Her character is flawed, painfully ambitious, fraught with doubts and absolutely sure she knows best...and usually she does. It takes you all the way to her retirement, itself done in true Tennison fashion.

These stories are not for the faint of heart, so if you are looking for a simple murder mystery of easy watching try the Midsomer Mysteries, or Father Brown series. It is often hard to watch the goings on in this series because it is true to life, life being cruel, hard, unforgiving, unrelenting and in some people's worlds just plain Hades. Fascinating and unforgettable like watching a disaster happening, this series gets you hooked. It forces you to think, feel the anguish and yet keep watching.

A perfect series without flaw, this is a masterpiece of film making. A must for mystery lovers who like the raw, gritty substance of true-to-life stories, this is the apex of its kind. Buy it for yourself or for a gift.......but remember...not for the faint of heart. Highly recommended!

This is an excellent series, but be very carful when buying the complete Collection. The discs are very tight in each series, and will crack when taking the discs out of the case, I don't know weather others have found this problem, but there are a number of cases in the box set, and all the discs are very tight in all the cases, I have had some crack on me.

Prime Suspect is an Excellent series/Helen Mirren is outstanding as Jane Tennison. Writing and acting of entire cast is wonderful. I wish there were more of these. As a badly hearing impaired fan, I REALLY appreciate the subtitles, and captions on Series 7, but why no subtitles on that last one ('the Final Act')?

I bought this to keep me company while I was recovering from surgery. I had seen the series as it came out the first time and loved it then. It was just as good the second time through. Helen Mirren is the very best.

I have watched all of this show before,in fact I still own it in video tape. This blue ray version has exceeded all my quality expectations! I have watched the first three and a half seasons and am not quite sure why the first part of season four is in full screen. However,as I have said ,this is a great production and well worth the money!!
