The computerized, corporation-controlled future offers little inspiration for college student John Reddy. When he inadvertently sees a sorceress awaken King Arthur from centuries-long slumber, John becomes an unwilling participant in the quest to reunite Arthur with the sword Caliburn. This may sound like tired material, but Charrette (Never Trust an Elf) juxtaposes past legend with future world to create clever twists in the tale. A magical parallel world seeks to reestablish its power among men by creating a convergence. In the process, on onslaught of elves, demons, fairies, goblins, private detectives, secret service agents and corporate executives attempt to either help or hinder the fabled reunion of king and sword. Unfortunately, this menagerie also prevents character development, and reader confusion often substitutes for suspense. In spite of these drawbacks, the story offers a heart-pumping ride as the world of humans and the Realm of Faery head for collision. The first in a trilogy, this is also the first paperback in Warner's new Aspect imprint devoted primarily to science fiction and fantasy.
