Book Description

In August 2003, Rory Stewart took a taxi from Jordan to Baghdad. A Farsi-speaking British diplomat, he was soon appointed deputy governor of Amarah and then Nasiriyah, provinces in the remote, impoverished marsh region of southern Iraq. Stewart takes us inside the occupation and beyond the Green Zone, introducing us to a colourful cast of Iraqis and revealing the complexity and fragility of a society we struggle to understand.


About the Author

Rory Stewart was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Malaysia. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The Sunday Times and The Guardian.

Like Rory Stewart's Places in Between, Prince of the Marshes is a superbly written and engulfing book. The best thing about Stewart's style is his way of conveying a great deal of emotion, humour, or social-political insight through understatement and subtle nuance. This book provides more insight into the political situation in Iraq than anything else I've read. Stewart doesn't try to hit you over the head with an ideological position nor does he set out to vilify one side. Instead you get a sense of just how complex the situation in Iraq is -- the well-meant reconstruction efforts that collapse, the frustrating bureaucracy and communication breakdowns, the senseless violence, and the complex social fabric of a diverse people with a long history but scarred by years of war and poverty. I recommend both of Stewart's books to anyone looking to understand the humanity behind the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rory Stewart is one those plucky, savvy British civil servants who hired himself out in 2003 as a civilian administer to the Coalition forces in Iraq. His was a job of helping to oversee the post-war reconstruction process. What he discovered, in his work as deputy governor in the desolately poor Marsh region in southern Iraq,was nothing short of incredible. For Rory and other western officials,putting this war torn nation on the road to democracy was going to demand a delicate mixture of diplomacy, Machivellian tact, and mental toughness to bring all the various tribal and religious factions together for the purpose of stable government. What the book lacks in the adventurous, flamboyant style of T.E. Lawrence's "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" is more than made up with anecdotes of some very thought-provoking encounters between the Prince of the Marches and Stewart himself. Both men, from two vastly different cultures, seem to be coming at solving the problem of Iraqi's uncertain future, from opposite ends. One to consolidate power on autocratic grounds, the other to share it on a humanitarian basis. Through his frustrations with trying to get various sheikhs and Shiite/Sunni clerics, Stewart quickly learned that the building of democratic institutions in this country will take a long time. No quick-fix solutions such as expected by Coalition leaders and bureaucrats like Paul Bremer in the form of open and free elections. His became a journey to discover strong men amongst the Iraqis who were willing to help develop a sense of British civility and justice in a normally brutalized society. I have a strong impression that as Stewart finished his contract, he started to see the forces of law and order taking hold in the Marshes.

Stewart details his frustrations with the locals and the coalition in clear and concise prose. In my opinion his over-use of quotes by Machiavelli at the beginning of each chapter becomes a little redundant.

Overall an excellent read of a very difficult but noble undertaking-the democratisation of Iraq.
