Zafon's first book re released,
By
This review is from: The Prince of Mist (Audio CD)
I'm a fan of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, having enjoyed his adult novels The Shadow of the Wind and the Angels Game. I was surprised to find that The Prince of Mist was actually the first novel Zafon wrote and this and his first four novels were all young adult offerings. The Prince of Mist is a period piece as well. It is 1943 and the Carver family - Mom, Dad, Max, Alicia and Irina leave the city and move to a coastal town to avoid the war. They move into a house formerly occupied by a Dr. Fleishman. His son Jacob tragically drowned on the beach close by. There are many things that seem bit off for Max, the 13 yr old protagonist. Clocks that may be moving backward, a cat that seems to be staring at him, a mysterious garden of stone statues and more. Max and Alicia make friends with Roland, a boy from the nearby town. The oddities and strange happenings continue to build (no one likes an evil clown), culminating in a dramatic climax. Although it was a young adult title, I totally enjoyed The Prince of Mist. I listened to it in audio format. The reader was Jonathan Davis. In the beginning I found the inflection a bit static. It was difficult to determine what character was talking unless you listened for the 'Max said' clarifiers. As the tension increased in the story, so did the timbre and tone. The ambiance of the story is pure Zafon. It has a Gothic horror, mysterious feel. Magic, fantasy and yes, some romance are all part of the tale. Zafon is able to conjure up such a deliciously creepy atmosphere with his rich and evocative prose. I enjoyed listening to Zafon's first novel - his adult novels are an extension and growth of the style shown in this first book. A book for fans, young and older.

Was not aware that it's a book for «young adults»,
This review is from: The Prince of Mist (Hardcover)
I was a bit disappointed when, I opened the first page, to read the preface saying how he hopes to please his young readers with this book!!! Nowhere, in the description was it mentioned... Anyway, I still read it but I'm sure my 13 year old daughter will enjoy this more than me!!!

A fantastic Gothic tale!,

This review is from: The Prince of Mist (Hardcover)
I read "Shadow of the Wind" as a book club read that my friend recommended; and fell in love with Zafon's clever, fantastical, Gothic style. Although unimpressed with "The Angel's Game", I knew I had to read "Prince of Mist" when it came out - and I did, in a span of just over an hour.Although meant for the YA genre, "Prince of Mist" is a clever Gothic tale of the Carver family moving from the main city they live in (although one can assume it's location is Spain, Zafon's writing style implies the family could live in any European city during WWII) to the coast to avoid the threat. However, there is another evil that will threaten the Carver children and their new friend, Roland... As Max continues to learn and investigate the threat and mystery behind the strange cat his sister Irina adopts, the garden of statues that disappear one day in their yard, the sunken ship, which seems to be the centre of the tale, and the tragic past of those who lived in the house his family now inhabits, the reader breathlessly anticipates the next move. Zafon, without a single doubt in my mind, is a master storyteller. He's not a writer; he's not just someone who can sit at a computer and type out words that form sentences and paragraphs... he's a storyteller who can weave the words of his characters, his locations, his plot together in a story so thickly entrenched with mystery, romance and magic that every page is a page-turner filled with tension and riddled with suspense. Despite "the Prince of Mist" being a young adult novel, I would recommend this fantastic thriller to anyone who enjoys a good mystery filled with romance and adventure. I eagerly await Zafon's next novel - whether for adults or teenagers - as this man can cast a spell on any reader with his talent (and the talent of his brilliant translator, Lucia Graves)!
