Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9–The fifth installment of the Princess Diaries series (HarperCollins, 2004) finds Mia Thermapolis, high school freshman and Genovian princess, encountering many of the same dilemmas she did in the previous four books. There are more princess lessons, never-ending algebra homework, the elusive accomplishment of reaching self-actualization, and a crises or two with her boyfriend Michael. However, things are beginning to look up for Mia. She is the newest staff member on the school's newspaper, albeit in charge of the weekly lunch menu, and her 15th birthday is only days away and so is Michael's senior prom. Unfortunately, Mia's obsession about attending the prom appears to be all for naught as Michael would rather go bowling than attend a "lame" dance. This shocking announcement is a precursor of things to come. During Mia's birthday dinner at a high class French restaurant, Grandmere's hairless toy poodle creates panic among the customers, causing a busboy to drop a tray of lobster bisque onto Grandmere. When the busboy is fired, Mia's best friend, Lilly, promptly organizes a service worker's strike, which in turn causes the cancellation of the prom. In the end, everything works out to Mia's satisfaction. Narrator Clea Lewis, returns as the perfect voice of Princess Mia while maintaining the ability to shift flawlessly between supporting characters. Author Meg Cabot continues to accurately portray the roller coaster emotional ride between the lows of teen angst and highs of teen love in this continuing saga. Libraries circulating the previous books in this series should continue to meet the demands of Cabot's fans with this lighthearted adventure.–Cheryl Preisendorfer, Twinsburg City Schools, OH

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. The fifth volume in the Princess Diaries series finds Mia Thermopolis, high-school freshman and Genovian princess-in-waiting, with much on her mind: her fifteenth birthday, her continuing search for self-actualization, princess lessons with imperious Grandmere, her pregnant mom's approaching due date, and, most important, boyfriend Michael's senior prom. As expected, snafus abound. Michael shows no interest in prom; there's a rift with best friend Lilly; Grandmere's pooch causes haute uproar in a snooty restaurant, resulting in a service workers' strike; and, horrors, the prom is canceled. Mia's journal entries, filled with pop references and animated commentary, are sure to entertain; her romantic expectations (drawn largely from her favorite movies) contrast humorously with reality checks. Series fans will enjoy Mia's continuing saga that once again blends typical teen trials with noblesse oblige, and look forward to another installment. Shelle Rosenfeld

4.0 out of 5 stars An improvment on the series, July 2 2004
By A Customer
I loved the 5th book in the Princess Diaries series! I have the whole series and I could read them over and over and never get bored! Mia is the typical (well kind of with the exception of the whole Princess thing) 15 year old girl, who has a boyfriend who hates the idea of going to the prom. He says he would rather go bowling. Through the whole book Mia is basically trying to get Michael Moscovitz to ask her to the prom. Does she succeed? Does Michael finally ask her to the prom? Find out by reading The Princess Diaries V: Princess in Pink, it is definately worth reading. Don't forget to check out Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement coming only on the big screen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Here come's Mia...again, Jun 10 2004
Just like all of Meg Cabot's books this was spectacular.
It might not be thought-provoking, but it sure is something
nice to read late-at-night. It cracks you up, knowing
that this stuff happens to us teenagers all the time. Interesting things happen between Mia and Michael you won't want to miss.....

5.0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Yet, Jun 1 2004
By A Customer
This was one of the best Princess Diaries books yet. Not only was it very interesting, but it was hard to put down. I read it on a train, and it definetaly kept me busy, because I had one question, "Will Mia get to wear her pink prom dress?" My question was answered, and I can NOT WAIT until the next PD book comes out. These books are phenomenal.
