Set in medieval Japan, Miyazaki's original story envisions a struggle between nature and man. The march of technology, embodied in the dark iron forges of the ambitious Tatara clan, threatens the natural forces explicit in the benevolent Great God of the Forest and the wide-eyed, spectral spirits he protects. When Ashitaka, a young warrior from a remote, and endangered, village clan, kills a ravenous, boar-like monster, he discovers the beast is in fact an infectious "demon god," transformed by human anger. Ashitaka's quest to solve the beast's fatal curse brings him into the midst of human political intrigues as well as the more crucial battle between man and nature.
Miyazaki's convoluted fable is clearly not the stuff of kiddie matinees, nor is the often graphic violence depicted during the battles that ensue. If some younger viewers (or less attentive older ones) will wish for a diagram to sort out the players, Miyazaki's atmospheric world and its lush visual design are reasons enough to watch. For the English-language version, Miramax assembled an impressive vocal cast including Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup (as Ashitaka), Claire Danes (as San), Minnie Driver (as Lady Eboshi), Billy Bob Thornton, and Jada Pinkett Smith. They bring added nuance to a very different kind of magic kingdom. Recommended for ages 12 and older. --Sam Sutherland

This review is from: Princess Mononoke (DVD)
Miyazaki has done wonders with all of his work, but none so as PRINCESS MONONOKE. To me this is his crowning achievement. A combination of adventure action and romance creates the ultimate movie. The compelling characters, imaginative creatures, proportional backdrops, amazing cinimatograpghy, and the exellent story combined creates an epic man against beast, nature, fellow man, and himself the whole family will enjoy. Way to go Myazaki.

A bit too far out for this westerner,
This review is from: Princess Mononoke (DVD)
I was expecting something out of the ordinary, and I ended up getting a bit more than I was bargining for..The first thing that hits you with this movie is the outstanding animations, and really nice english dub (A minus for Billy Bob though, he sounds so bored that you kinda end up feeling sorry for the guy), you also get quickly drawn into the plot, and develop a certain amount of feelings for the main characters on both sides of the struggle. Then it gets muddy..forest spirits and things that problably has a lot of bearing in japaneese mythology is the focalpoint of the storyline, and for a westerner like myself, it gets too strange and remote. I think I can grasp the basic meaning and theme of the film, the human greed and the animalgods are also accepted gratiously, but I cant grasp the mean of getting there..it gets too grandios, too weird..the ending is like David Lynch on acid -- It seems intelligent, but simply doesnt make sense for me.. The movie is however well worth watching, it is technically brilliant and emotionally engaging, if you dont mind weird supernatural elements I even recommend it, but if you want to see something with bearing in our own world you may want to try out a more down to earh anime like Perfect Blue.
