Description

Atmospheric, stylish and scary, PROFILER broke the mold for TV detective shows. Created by L.A. Law's Cynthia Saunders, the program stars Ally Walker (Singles, While You Were Sleeping) as an FBI criminal profiler with the unique ability to use the clues left at the scene to "see" crimes from the perspectives of both victim and perpetrator.

Working with the elite Violent Crime Task Force run by her mentor (Die Hard's Robert Davi), Sam uses her gift to resolve a succession of confounding cases. But she is unable to stop her nemesis, Jack-of-All-Trades, an elusive serial killer who has taken a deadly interest in her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thrill Continues, Sep 19 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Profiler:S2 (DVD)
BACKGROUND: Dr. Samantha ("Sam") Waters (played by Ally Walker) used to be a forensic psychologist/profiler for the FBI until a serial killer obsessed with her, called "Jack-of-all Trades" ("Jack"), killed her husband. She quit the Bureau & went into hiding. Sam & her daughter, Chloe (played by Caitlin Wachs), had been living with Angel (Sam's best friend; played by Erica Gimpel), an artist. Sam made ends meet as a photographer until her mentor & friend, Bailey Malone (played by Robert Davi), asked her to help the FBI solve a series of murders at the same time when "Jack" resurfaces. After the suspect of the murders had been caught, Bailey asked Sam to rejoin the FBI on a full-time basis. Sam agreed but she set certain conditions. The new FBI unit, headed by Bailey Malone, was called the Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF). The VCTF was in charge of investigating & solving violent crimes all over the US - this included tracking down the elusive "Jack" who continually taunted Sam.

SESASON 2 (some spoilers): In Season 2, the storyline got more personal & the scenes exhibited a bit more gore. The viewers were left off with John Grant (played by Julian McMahon) leaving the VCTF, Sam being the prime suspect of a murder, & Bailey's life hanging on the balance after he was shot by his rebellious, teen-aged daughter, Frances (played by Heather McComb), who ran away). Sam eventually got cleared of the murder after "Jack" sent a written confession to the police while Bailey recovered (Bailey actually owes his life partially to John because John drove him to the hospital). John went back to the VCTF & Frances was later found. The storyline showed the audience how worried Bailey was for his daughter & that he loved her enough to break the law. As for Sam, the parents of Tom (Sam's deceased husband) came into the picture. They gave Sam a problem with regards to Chloe's custody. Dr. Grace Alvarez (the VCTF's head medical expert; played by Roma Maffia) gave birth (Sam assisting in the delivery was a nice touch to lighten a "dark" show). The past of computer expert George Fraley (played by Peter Frechette) caught up with him. Angel was kidnapped by a father who wanted his son to be freed from prison ... Sam & the rest of the VCTF did everything they could to rescue her. A background on Sam & Angel's college days was shown (it was interesting that one of the guest stars was Arye Gross; prior to "Profiler" Ally & Arye starred in a movie called "The Continued Adventures of Reptile Man"). The face of "Jack's" mother was shown & one was able to glimpse their mother-son relationship (their relationship was kind of weird, to say the least). "Jack" got a "partner", an ex-convict called "Jill" (played by Traci Lords).

The gory part of Season 2 is credited to "Jack" & "Jill." I believe that "Jill" was supposed to be a surrogate for Sam (although I don't think that "Jack" ever believed that "Jill" could be/take the place of Sam). The two commit crimes all over the country. In comparing Season 2 with Season 1, there was more focus on the crime scenes & blood for Season 2 (some scenes were quite disturbing).

The irritating parts of Season 2 were: (1) that the exit of Nathan Brubaker (played by Michael Whaley) was not explained (we saw him having an active part in the last few episodes of Season 1 but he "disappeared" in Season 2), & (2) a new guy called Marcus Payton (played by Shiek Mahmud-Bey) was brought in but his character never really "gelled" with the others (maybe it was because only a few storylines included him).

Season 2 was interesting & still exhibited "quality programming" regardless of its minor "flaws".

The season ended with a cliffhanger set in a prison ... the VCTF trying to catch "Jack".

OTHER COMMENTS: "Profiler" was an exceptional series. It had a female lead: an FBI agent working as a profiler that was BRILLIANTLY played by Ally Walker. Ms. Walker was able to portray Samantha Waters as a strong & intelligent woman without sacrificing the character's femininity. She convincingly played a mother (to Chloe) & friend (to those around her). Samantha Waters was one of the best female characters that have ever appeared on TV. I loved the fact that "Sam", with all her problems, still had a good sense of humor (especially around Bailey). While watching the series, one could really feel for what "Sam" was going through. As for the other characters in the show, a viewer could sense that the core VCTF team (Sam, Bailey, Grace, John, & George) was like family. This could only happen with a great supporting cast. The series was very successful in integrating a short plot (good for a 1 hour show) & a long sub-plot (the "Jack" storyline).

The show lasted for 4 seasons on NBC but Ally Walker only stayed on until the 1st 2 episodes of the 4th Season. The new profiler for the remainder of the 4th Season was played by Jamie Luner. With all due respect to Ms. Luner, in my opinion, Ally Walker was the one & only profiler.

I'm very happy that "Profiler" Season 2 is now available to pre-order on DVD. I can't wait for the other seasons (all the episodes of the show) to be in DVD format.
