Book Description

#1 New York Times– bestselling author J. D. Robb takes us to the New York City of 2060, where Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces down a cop killer.

A Amarylis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

Dallas's friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris and Coltraine had started a serious relationship, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone from Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on Coltraine's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else."

But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dallas, Lieutenant Eve, is coming to life, Mar 26 2012
By
Lady Sam (100 Mile House / BC) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Having read the first chapter as a teaser in one of the earlier books, I simply could not resist indulging in yet another adventure in the Eve Dallas series. And I was not disappointed.
As before, there are plenty of red herrings floating about, with a prime suspect soon emerging. There are always plenty of ups and downs and 'was it really him/her?' type scenarios while the Lieutenant relentlessly follows the clues. And as so many have already stated to Eve Dallas herself - a murder is not just another case for her but a dead person deserving justice and family and friends answers as to what happened to their loved one.
Promises In Death gets personal. Not only is the victim a cop and known to Eve but she is also the lady of a dear friend of hers and her husband's which puts even more pressure on the Lieutenant to solve this murder. It does not get any more personal than that!
As for Eve Dallas' private and social 'education' - well, she's about to host a bridal shower at her house while hubby takes the fellas to Vegas. Talk about a fish seriously out of water! This is an absolutely priceless situation, experiencing Eve's anxiety through J D Robb's penmanship up close and very personal.
Yes, I believe, it is becoming quite obvious that I do very much enjoy this series ... off to get the next novel, me thinks. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read by my favourite author, May 8 2010

This review is from: Promises In Death (Hardcover)
I've been reading this line of J.D. Robb's for quite awhile. I know that she is Nora Roberts and I just love reading all her works. These novels take place in the future in New York, New York!

This particular book is about Eve Dallas and all her cohorts as are in all of this series of books. Eve is a cop with a cop's mentalty and is insecure about herself. This book sees her, getting out of her usual funk and enjoy, to her surprise, the company of many of her friends and including them in her investigation of the murder of another female cop.

I haven't quite finished reading this novel, but I'm reading as fast as I can, to find out "who done it". I do recommend this "In Death" series. I haven't read all of this series, but I intend to and collect them all!
