Product Description

Talk about a bad-hair day!

Sophie Garou is a master at taming her inner beast, which comes in handy since she’s a werewolf. With a big promotion at work and a supersexy boyfriend, Heath (whom she recently spotted leaving a jewelry store with a beguiling ring box), she’s one happy girl.

But when Heath starts spending long nights at the office with his new associate–a dead-ringer for Career Day Barbie–Sophie smells trouble. And when her professional relationship with her big new client–who also happens to be Texas’s brilliantly blue-eyed most eligible bachelor–begins to sizzle, she wonders if her animal instincts are leading her in the wrong direction. Just when it seems that things can’t get any more complicated, they do. The Houston werewolf pack has sniffed Sophie out, and their message is chillingly clear: you’re either with us or against us. And unless she can prove that she’s with them, the next full moon may just be her last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, delicious and supernatural!, Nov 27 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: On the Prowl: Tales of an Urban Werewolf (Mass Market Paperback)
After finishing Howling at the Moon, the first installment of this series, I was eagerly anticipating reading On the Prowl. Karen MacInerney did not disappoint! I was immediately immersed in this second Tale of an Urban Werewolf. This novel took me all of 24 hours to read. My boyfriend's absence may have had something to do with that but, great writing and an awesome story were definitely strong contributing factors as well.

Sophie Garou is back and is as entertaining as ever. One of the main attractions in this series for me is the contrast between her human life and her animal one. She's just made partner at a high powered auditor firm and is expecting a proposal from her boyfriend Heath. Of course, that is until her second nature gets in the way. Sophie has been flying under the werewolf radar all of her life but in this book her secret is exposed and she's faced with werewolves galore. Not her idea of an ideal situation!

Miss Garou's constant battle against unruly hair growth was as hilarious as in the first book. I particularly enjoyed a bathroom stall conversation between her and Lourdes, a new werewolf. They're comparing hair removal horror stories with different techniques likes Nair, waxing, shaving, etc. The challenges of being a modern day female werewolf! This talk reminded me of the banter I hear in public washrooms but with a supernatural twist. I like the way MacInerney gives the characters dilemmas that are similar to every day life. It makes them all the more relatable. When Sophie pulled out her back-up razor for her friend I couldn't help but giggle.

I wish I had Sophie's problems with men! She may me a magnet for trouble but she's also one for swoon worthy men. A third handsome male is added to her plate in the form of Mark, her biggest new client. He's rich, gorgeous, chivalrous but there's more to him than meets the eye. Way more! The book doesn't entirely explain what's up with him; I'm hoping the final installment will. Mark sort of overshadows the two other men. Heath, her boyfriend fades into the background but Tom is as delicious as ever. Between Mark and Tom I'm having a hard time choosing a favorite!

Garou finally meets the local pack leaders and is sent on a reconnaissance mission for them. This fashionista isn't quite cut out for stealthy spying! Naturally, she blows her cover and find herself running from her enemies and her main concern seems to be her shoes. In her situation, shoes would not have been high on my priority list while running for my life. Then again, I wouldn't have went on such a mission wearing $500 high heeled shoes. But that's just me!

The ending of this book is a whirlwind of action. Secrets are revealed, questions are answered but like any good book in a series there are a few mysteries left unsolved. After finishing this book, there was never any doubt in my mind that I was going to read Leader of the Pack but it's always nice to get a little more incentive. I'm sad to say that there's only three books in this series. Right now I'm wishing that there were more but before I start whining I'll wait and see what the conclusion holds.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Smell Another Hit!, Jan 4 2009
By Anna Hope - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: On the Prowl: Tales of an Urban Werewolf (Mass Market Paperback)
Pardon the pun, but I wolfed this book down over the course of two nights because I was so interested in the story it was hard to put it down. Sophie's back and feeling great now that landing the Southeast Airlines account has made her partner and gotten her the corner office she always craved. But her new top client seems to be keeping a few hot secrets from her while he tries to win his way into her pantyhose.Which may not be such a bad idea as the relationship between her and Heath seems to be waning just when she thought he was going to propose.

Tom, the Alpha werewolf is back in town- not only to complicate her life but also to pull her from the fire again as the Houston pack demands her presence and forcibly employs her talents. Not her auditing skills. With a mini-troop of made werewolves padding along after her and every magical creature in Austin popping up in her apartment Sophie's in for a very hectic Valentine's day.

Someone will learn the secret of her true nature...and at least one relationship will end. But Sophie will realize that she has hidden depths.

I would have given this five stars but towards the end there was a lot of confusing Aztec business thrown in and the editing in the book was not so great. As the author reached back to her first book in the series to explain current events, the last villains mother kept being mentioned. But the one they referenced was actually her aunt which was distracting. Also, I like for the heroine to be in demand but it seemed she was horny for every man in this book, which kind of makes it hard to take the romance seriously. But the positives far out weighed the negatives and I definitely recommend giving this book a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific Garou Texas werewolf tale, Nov 27 2008
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: On the Prowl: Tales of an Urban Werewolf (Mass Market Paperback)
After her recent escapades with weres and proving her mom a witch was not a killer (see HOWLING THE MOON) Austin werewolf Sophie Garou plans on keeping a low profile like she used to have before her recent problems. She especially prays the powerful Houston pack ignores her solo existence in the midst of them.

Instead, the pack leadership demands Sophie come to them or else. She has no choice if she wants things to remain positive with her boyfriend Heath and at her accounting firm Withers and Young where she made partner. The Houston pack is outraged by her living inside their territory as strays are normally unacceptable, but what makes her worse in their lupine eyes is that the half-breed has been inside their turf under the werewolf radar screen for a few decades. To make amends and calm their fears of a rogue, she agrees to spy on the San Antonio pack, but quickly realizes she is not a good undercover agent and her new accounting client Southeast Airlines CEO Mark Sydney seems to be sniffing around her an awful lot making her wonder if he is ON THE PROWL with her his target.

The second Garou Texas werewolf tale is a terrific follow-up to a strong opener due to the heroine's actions and reactions as she no longer can hide under the radar scope. Sophie cannot understand how her world has crumbled so fast. However she is strong perhaps because she is the offspring of a witch and a werewolf; so faces her issues with courage albeit reluctant bravery as she would rather hide. Fans will appreciate her howling adventures that give biting meaning to the modern day wild west.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, interesting details, May 30 2009

I have really enjoyed this series and can't wait for #3. The author shows a wonderful sense of humor while keeping the plot jumping. Yes, when it comes to fashion and external trappings, our heroine is shallow. That just adds to the underlying humor. If you are looking for serious moral lessons, read Pilgrim's Progress. If you are looking for a reluctant female werewolf with seriously unusual powers, a werewolf whose human shaved legs transmute into shaved wolf legs (!) and who is embarrassed by her mother's being a witch, go for this series and have a good time.
