Product Description

Filled with exciting, current research findings, PSYCHOLOGY: THEMES AND VARIATIONS shows you the many ways that psychology applies to your life today and every day! Authors Wayne Weiten and Doug McCann show both the unity and the diversity of psychology's subject matter, illuminate the process of research and its intimate link to application, and masterfully manage to make the text both challenging to think about and easy to learn from. They cover topics ranging from a-delta fibres to zygotes, exploring broad social questions and personal, practical issues like the mysteries of love and the symptoms of stress. Woven thoroughly through each chapter are references to Canadian research and the Canadian context, relevant Canadian statistics, and highlighted issues of particular concern to Canadians, such as bilingualism, cultural diversity, First Nations peoples' issues, and the contribution of women to Canadian psychology and Canadian life. Students will discover what is learned from behaviours such as eating and fighting, and dig deeper to investigate how hormones affect emotions and how the brain registers pain. They will find that Psychology is an amazingly diverse field, with a legacy of unity (its themes) as well as diversity (its variations)! NETA Testbank The Nelson Education Teaching Advantage (NETA) program delivers research-based resources that promote student engagement and higher-order thinking and enable the success of Canadian students and educators. This book’s premium testbank is designed to ensure top quality multiple-choice testing by avoiding common errors in question and test construction. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great general psychology intro resource, April 23 2011
This review is from: Psychology: Themes and Variations (Hardcover)
Psychology themes and variations is a great introduction to the study of psychology. It is written in part by award winning university professor Doug McCann who makes the subject vibrant and entertaining. The text is easy to follow and the large quantity of pictures and thematic reminders makes it particularly useful for the visual learner. I still remember many of the vivid examples Doug and his writing partner Wayne Weiten offer in each chapter.
This is a Canadian text using Canadian examples in a Canadian context. If you are hoping to get a overview of the subject of psychology, you cannot make a better choice than this book. If you are interested in the subjects of consciousness, relational psychotherapy, meditation and hypnosis (elements I use today in my private practice) you will find this book supportive of these sometimes overlooked elements as both the medical model of psychotherapy and the relational model are explored fairly equally. I know from conversations with professor McCann, that his views on depression are that it is a relationally influenced condition, which perfectly suits the relational component of my work as a therapist today using psychodynamic psychotherapy, couples therapy and hypnotherapy ([...]). Good luck in your psychology studies, I hope you get to love this book as much as I have.
