4.0 out of 5 stars Second Round of the Deadly Game Starts Sep 27 2012
By Tsuyoshi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Toshiaki Iwashiro's "Psyren" is an adventure comic series serialized in a magazine "Weekly Shonen Jump." It follows the story of a high school student Ageha Yoshina, who is whisked away to the strange world where a real survival game is going on.

Ageha comes back alive from the first round of the deadly "game" with a help from his childhood friend Sakurako "Ice Queen" Amamiya. Sakurako must train Ageha quickly for the next game because the next game will be only in a few weeks. Also, a few interesting things are revealed about muscular Hiryu Asaga, one of the survivors of the first Psyren game depicted in the first volume.

The comic shifts its focus from the urban legends of a red telephone card and missing people to the quest of the truths behind Psyren, an alternate world that strongly suggests a catastrophic event in the future. The comic's pace gets faster with several new characters introduced into the story, though Ageha, Sakurako and Hiryu remain the central characters who push the story forward. They are all interesting and likable, and provide occasional humor, sometimes in an unexpected fashion.

Some of the story elements may remind us of another "Weekly Shonen Jump" comic, "Bleach" - a dashing hero (Ichigo Kurosaki) with potential for special powers, and a cool heroine (Rukia Kuchiki) training him, etc. "Psyren" may not be as famous as Tite Kubo's long-running comic series, but the comic offers a thrilling read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Uri Geller with Monsters Mar 26 2012

Format:Paperback
Finding out your home is nothing but a wasteland in the future can be devastating. For Ageha Yoshina and his friends, beating Nemesis Q's game might be the only chance to save Japan. This book focuses on Yoshina and Asaga's psychic powers as they begin to flourish, with help and training from Amamiya. This book also plunges deeper into the world of Psyren, explaining the Nemesis Q's rules. Yoshina seems to be struggling when compared to Asaga's strength, but does Yoshina have a a secret power that could be a game changer?

I liked this book, even though I didn't read the first volume. There was enough information to keep me interested, but not lost. The art style is reminiscent of Eiichiro Oda, with a more serious tone to it. Every character has a look to them that can be taken in an evil way, expect for the main protagonist, Asaga. The strongest part of this book is the plot. While it seems to be standard shonen manga form, there is something more sinister hidden under the surface of this book. I hope that the story continues to follow the tone it has set forth and not become another battle mange.
