Book Description

A Public Faith is refreshingly different. Charles Drew has written a challenging book-not about what Christians should think regarding social and political issues-but about how to develop practical biblical convictions. This book gives a much needed call to action without politicizing the church. Charles Drew's balanced approach gives Christians a solid, biblical foundation for making decisions. Drew shows how Christians can make a difference in their world by developing the qualities of servanthood, cooperation, diversity, integrity, and simplicity. He also addresses the controversial area of civil disobedience, and the foundational area of the church's role in the world.

About the Author

CHARLES DREW is a member of his local "Executive Committee of Education 2000" steering committee. He initiated a consortium of local clergy, school faculty, and administrators to bring about the adoption of 'Religion in the Public Schools" which advocates religious pluralism in holiday celebrations and school curriculum. Drew is a Presbyterian minister who speaks regularly at universities, InterVarsity, and Campus Crusade events, FOCUS camps, and "The Fellowship," a large group of young Christian professionals in the Washington, D.C. area. He and his family live in Jersey City, New Jersey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fair and Balanced -- Really!, Jun 6 2004
By Kenneth M. Shomo (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Charles Drew's book concerning faith, politics, and social issues is even-handed and thoughtful. This is clearly not a "Republican" or "Democrat" book. Rather, his is a self-consciously Christian and biblical approach. Since Christians in 2004 (including myself!) have trouble thinking beyond ready-made political identities, this alone makes the book a must-read.

Each chapter is shaped by considering a key passage of Scripture, and questions are included at the end of each chapter to help "make it personal." For example, the introductory chapter exegetes Psalm 97, beginning with the words, "The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad!" Here, Drew urges readers to consider whether they really find "gladness" in knowing the Lord reigns -- or are their political views shaped by fear and anxiety? He offers other insights from this psalm, including an examination of different ways people of various political persuasions make government into an "idol" (see v.7).

A variety of practical considerations are discussed in this brief book, but its greatest contribution is in helping Christians sharpen their thinking in ways that apply to ANY political topic.

You will benefit from this thoughtful book. Highly recommended!
