Product Description

When it first appeared, Jonathan Gruber's Public Finance and Public Policy was the first textbook to truly reflect the way public finance issues were evaluated, implemented, and researched in the real world today.  Like no other text available, it enhanced its survey of essential, traditional topics with an emphasis on empirical work and coverage of transfer programs and social insurance. Coming in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the presidential election, the 2009 stimulus package, and ongoing debates over financial reform and health care reform-Gruber is the author of Massachusetts' universal coverage plan-the new edition couldn't be more timely. Thoroughly updated, Public Finance and Public Policy, Third Edition brings students up to date on the important debates that are dominating today's policymaking, giving them the basic tools they need to understand fundamental public finance issues now and in the future.

This text provides a good combination of real-world examples and mathematical justification for the economic decisions made by governments (particularly the US government).

I am in a MPA program and this text was required. Gruber helped make economics interesting and understandable. This text is a great choice for educators and students alike.
4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Helpful; Rambles at times Nov 19 2012

Gruber's text is well-written and relevant. Admittedly not as concise as it could be, as a student I didn't mind the length at some portions because things were thoroughly explained. As economics texts go, this is probably the least "dry" I've encountered.

Gruber uses relevant and concise examples to illustrate points and inserts some humor to keep the read a little easier.
As another reviewer noted, this text can ramble on a bit much at times, but intelligent skimming through use of subtitles and keywords can avoid that. The problems are good, but at times can be more confusing than necessary.
