Review

"Lawrence Gostin's Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint is not only lively, engaging, and entirely readable, it also cuts no corners in accuracy or precision of legal analysis."--Metapsychology Online

Product Description

Public Health Law, first published in 2000, has been widely acclaimed as the definitive statement on public health law at the start of the twenty-first century. Lawrence O. Gostin's definition was based on the notion that government bears a responsibility for advancing the health and well-being of the general population, and the book developed a rich understanding of the government's powers and duties while showing law to be an effective tool in the realization of a healthier and safer population. In this second edition, Gostin analyzes the major health threats of our times, from emerging infectious diseases and bioterrorism to chronic diseases caused by obesity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good reference, Poor Readability., Feb 4 2011

This review is from: Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint, Revised and Expanded Second Edition (Paperback)
The best part of this book is its index. After reading the Showalter Law in Health Administration text, this Gostin Public Health Law text makes me want to stick a fork in my eye. I struggled to make it through every chapter. It's verbose, unbelievably redundant, and over-complicates and beleaguers simple material. I would not recommend it. If you are in a course that uses it as a primary text book, drop the course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing reference for Public Health Law, Mar 16 2009

This review is from: Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint, Revised and Expanded Second Edition (Paperback)
Public Health Law has not attracted academic interest in Europe among Medical Law professionals. De facto, it has remained an untouched area. Therefore I was amazed to find this comprehensive title. Although it bases much on US law and case law, it still captures the essential points of PHLaw applicable everywhere. It is an fascinating story in terms of history, cases, human rights etc. It is also interesting for those interested in regulation theory.

I am starting this course that requires this text and was happy it was in Kindle format. On my first assignment I realized it will be mostly useless because there are no page numbers. Stupid oversight for a textbook. Thanks guys.
