This review is from: The Publishing History of Aubrey Beardsley's Compositions for Oscar Wilde's Salome (Paperback)
Do the compositions of Aubrey Beardsley illustrate Oscar Wilde's text of Salomé? Author Joan Navarre examines this question and its many implications in her 1995 work: _The Publishing History of Aubrey Beardsley's Compositions for Oscar Wilde's Salomé._
A meticulous researcher, Navarre traces the evolution of the publishing history of Salomé through the examination of (by my count) twenty-seven different English illustrated editions of the play. In documenting the change over time, the author considers not only the obvious acts of censorship on Beardsley's work, but also carefully notes seemingly minor differences within a single edition (the varying width of a border in the 1912 Bodley Head edition).
This is not a casual read. Navarre's publication is dense with information and requires thoughtful consideration. However, for the student of Wilde, Beardsley, Bodley Head, Total Book Design and Salomé it is a priceless resource and viable tool.
The work is thorough, the scholarship and methodology solid and the end result is a solid contribution to the literature. Highly recommended
