Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-11–California girl, Calypso Kelly, is the only one in her upscale British boarding school who is Pulling Princes (Bloomsbury, 2004). Pulling is slang for kissing, and Calypso has attracted the attention of Prince Freddie after they both competed in a fencing match. This is a real change of social status for Calypso whose only friend at St. Augustine's had been spunky Star, daughter of an English rock musician. The American girl has been making new friends since she began rooming with former nemesis Georgina, but snobby Honey still has it in for Calypso. Working with Star and several new friends to create a school magazine and raising money for charity also helps Calypso feel like she belongs at the posh school. Though an unexpected photo in the British tabloids upsets Calypso briefly, a visit from her parents and the chance to talk to the alienated Prince Freddie help end the school term on a hopeful note. Author Tyne O'Connell reads her breezy, humorous text with the right amount of teen emotion. The rabbit in the cover art relates to the story but may not draw an adolescent audience. There's an extensive glossary of English slang and fencing terms at the end of the recording. While the vocabulary may be new to listeners, the petty jealousies, insecurities, and occasional four-letter words in the conversations of these high school girls will be universally recognizable. This first title in the series will be an additional, but welcome purchase for high school and public libraries.–Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CT

5.0 out of 5 stars pull off the shelf!, Feb 22 2005
By kittycat "KC" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Hardcover)
This was such a great book. Calypso Kelly is one of the few Americans at the posh british boarding school she attends. She has few friends: everyone loves to make fun of her accent. On top of all that, she is one of the few fencers, and she has no experience "pulling", or kissing, boys. Calypso takes things into her own hands, pretending that "gay Jay", her mom's PA, is her boyfriend in the States. This gives her an in with the most popular girls, and she is getting along quite nicely. She even attracts the attention of Prince Freddie, a royal! When the others discover this, one of the girls goes on the warpath, seeking to destroy Calypso's budding relationship. When she ends up in the tabloids, kissing Prince Freddie, her life gets even more crazy. Will Calypso be able to maintain her new friendships, defeat the evil girl, and win her prince?

5.0 out of 5 stars THE END, July 9 2005
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Hardcover)
this book was great! though many reviews have said, "its a bit confusing". i say "who says it shouldn't be?" when is the life of a teenager not "a little bit confusing"? it isn't very realistic, but that's what's fun about it. as nice as it is 2 read about realistic events, it's always fun 2 read something funny and "out there" once and a while.

after I read AND loved it, i recommended it 2 several of my friends. they all loved too. but in the end, it had us saying,

"WE WANT MORE!! THAT CAN'T BE THE END!!" and it isn't. it's just the beginning of a series that will b great. the other books are called, 'STEALING PRINCES' and 'DUELING PRINCES'. so b sure to check those out as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calypso Kelly, Dec 28 2004
By Bianca - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Pulling Princes (Hardcover)
This book is a very good read, a read one might call a beach read. It is centered around Calypso Kelly, the average teenage girl who desires to fit in and believes a good boyfriend will help her. It is light reading and perfect for anyone who is a pre-teen or teenager. It is filled with the normal teenage scenarios, royalty and of course, very strange names. Calypso? Arabella? Poppy? I believe this book is very good and I could not put it down! It was definitely one of my top 20 books I've ever read!
