With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption among modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) --Jim Emerson

Additional features

This Special VHS Collector's Edition of Pulp Fiction includes several scenes deleted from the original film, introduced with additional comments by director Quentin Tarantino.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cast / Story(s) / Music / Dialogue - It Has It All..., May 3 2004
This ground breaking movie has been endlessly discussed, praised, damned, ripped off and copied so many times that you can easily lose sight of the fact that what you have here is a genuinely original, exciting and important work of art that when experienced for the umpteenth time STILL never fails to thrill and amuse.

This movie is one of the few I would describe as perfect. I honestly cannot fault a thing about it. The brilliant dialogue has become legendary, the elliptical structure of the script has been much imitated and will continue to do so. The fantastic group of actors, who range from has-beens (at the time) to cult favourites, are all uniformly excellent, and the soundtrack is one of the coolest and most eclectic ever assembled. In short, this is a modern classic, and required viewing for all movie fans. 'Pulp Fiction' is as good as any movie you care to name. To (mis)quote Flavor Flav - "believe the hype!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?, May 12 2007
This review is from: Pulp Fiction (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
Pulp Fiction was always one of those movies that I'd always wanted to see. No one in my circle of friends had ever seen it; I never got anyone coming up to me and saying, "Hey have you seen Pulp Fiction yet?!". However every once and awhile I would hear it being referenced to by some movie critic. And then I saw it on IMDB (great movie site by the way) as the fifth greatest movie of all time. Then I knew I had to see it.

Everyday when I went to rent a movie I would always pass Pulp Fiction, pick it up, look at it read, the blurb on the back, and put it back down on the shelf thinking 'not today'. I mentally prepared myself for it. I knew it was a Quentin Tarantino movie so I had to be prepared for a little weirdness and I knew it was a dark humor classic so I had to be prepared to laugh at some pretty messed up things and I knew it was a little older movie (1996?) then what I liked to watch but one day I felt in the right mood so I picked it out and rented it.

And boy oh boy had I been missing out.

Pulp Fiction's story deals with the lives of several gangsters and lowlifes that intertwine. The plot line is non linear, and tells four main stories. For those of you Quentin Tarantino fans think of a plot like Sin City or for other people a plot like Babel.

Right off the bat you'll notice the great soundtrack and the fact that it hosts a star studded line up: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth. All pull of some of the best performances of their life times.

And the real magic of Pulp Fiction is the characters these guys play. Bruce Willis plays a down and out boxer who's asked to take a dive in a match. Uma Thurman is a mob boss's wife. Tim Roth plays out the Clyde part of an insane armed robbery couple. Harvey Keitel is magnificent as 'The Wolf' and even Tarantino acts flawlessly as a minor character.

But the greatest performances of all in this movie go to the pair of hilarious hitmen played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. Their characters are definitely two of the best of cinematic history (see my Listamania list for others) and deliver some of the best quotes ever produced from an actor's mouth (see my title for one of them, you have to see it in context). They are just unbelievably funny the whole god damn movie. Considering the disgusting things they do throughout the movie the fact that they can still make you laugh out loud is a testament to not only their acting but also to Quentin Tarantino's mastery at gallow's humor.

His offbeat situations and character development via simple dialogue in this movie just show how great this director really is at manipulating movies. Particularly during Bruce Willis's storyline you get a lot of silence and pointless conversation that really builds his character. Tarantino also pushes the boundaries in this movie with one particular scene which I didn't find too disturbing but some people may (think American History X disturbing). These two spots may it's weakness in the eyes of some viewers. It will seem slow and too weird but I thought it was amazing.

You have to like macabre humor to appreciate this movie fully. But if your like me and love your comedy dark then Pulp Fiction is a must see.
