A starkly original visual treat, this Halloween-themed exercise in terror is uncommonly well made, seeking to add yet another creature to horror film lore. A group of teenagers camping in a remote mountain resort accidentally kill a boy and cover it up, and his aggrieved father (Lance Henriksen) vows revenge. Enlisting the help of a local witch, he conjures up a mythic demonic monster to kill those responsible for his son's death. The plot and dialogue are not very original, but the creepy mood and some fine work by director Stan Winston (the special effects whiz behind Jurassic Park) make Pumpkinhead an eerie gothic horror tale and great viewing for Halloween nights. --Robert Lane

5.0 out of 5 stars Best scary movie. EVER! Oct 17 2009
Format:DVD
Stan Winston's directorial debut is a masterpiece of 80s horror. The effects are amazing and the story is great - no reliance on gratuitous gore, nudity, or violence. The story has a moral and uses suspense, great storytelling, and a dark and creepy atmosphere to draw in and entertain the viewer. Lance Henriksen is fabulous as always and the special features on the disc serve to enlighten on the meticulous process and attention to detail employed in creating the monster and the movie. Slasher fans or fans of excessive blood and guts may find this movie boring and/or disappointing, but viewers interested in a tale with substance should check it out. I have shared it with several horror and non-horror fans over the years and most agree it is much more than your typical scary movie. It's a must-see!

this film is more of a supernatural film than horror film.it isn't
really scary, though it is creepy.it maintains a great dark atmosphere
throughout.i thought the makeup effects were pretty elaborate for the
creature, but that's just my opinion.the creature itself seemed pretty
realistic,including its movements.as for the characters,they weren't
really very likable,so it's hard to feel anything for their plight.the
acting is merely adequate, with no real standouts, but Lance Henrickson
was pretty good in his role.he was certainly the best in the movie.the
movie itself tends to be slow art times.overall,id give Pumpkinhead a

I am a huge horror fan, but have found myself disappointed with many of the more recent horror films, particularly the garbage churned out by Artisan Entertainment. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly decent horror film
At first glance, you think this would be mediocre, right? For starters, there's the old "Oh we commited a crime we can't tell the police!" sort of plot. Read more
