Product Description

From Amazon.com

Punky Brewster: Season One proves the old, family-friendly sitcom is as captivating for kids today as it was in 1984. Somewhere in the tradition of Silas Marner and Chaplin's The Kid, Punky Brewster breathes new life in the story of an isolated bachelor who takes in a lost and forgotten child. Thanks to the inspired casting of Helsinki-born, journeyman actor George Gaynes (The Crucible) as misanthropic photographer-turned-foster dad Henry Warnimont, the tradition stays strong in Punky Brewster even as the series paints the world in primary colors for a young audience.

Gaynes's autumnal Henry is the gruff-but-lovable loner who discovers 8-year-old, abandoned Punky (Soleil Moon Frye) squatting with her golden lab puppy, Brandon, in an empty apartment across from his own. With great reluctance, Henry allows the loquacious, spunky Punky to stay with him until she's situated with Chicago's youth services, then misses her the moment she's gone. After a cute showdown with officials in court (Punky cracks wise atop the judge's desk), Henry and his moppet become a family, and the series explores the many ways in which the duo (well, Henry, actually) learns to accommodate a shared life. In "Punky Gets Her Own Room," the impetuous heroine turns Henry's dusty study into a brightly painted bedroom, much to her new dad's shock. "Parents Night" finds Henry annoyed that he's supposed to show up at his charge's school when he'd rather be working. Punky Brewster's initial 22 episodes wisely allowed the core relationship between man and girl to settle before introducing other significant characters and story threads. By the season's middle, however, other relationships and conflicts develop, including a romance for Henry and trouble with bullies at school. It's all good, family entertainment that doesn't condescend. Special features include three segments from the subsequent, animated It's Punky Brewster series. --Tom Keogh

PUNKY'S BAAACCCKKK!!! July 19 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have read all the reviews and it well derserves more than five stars. I am 30 years old and I remember watching Punky Brewster back in 1984 and 1985 when I was just a kid. Unfortunately I don't have the boxset as of yet, but it's definately in the works. But I do have Soliel Moon Frye's TV movie "You Ruined My Life" on tape so that kind of reminds of Punky Brewster. And I do have a few of her episodes. Soliel Moon Frye did an amazing job of starring in Punky Brewster. Her relationship was pheonominal to Henry (George Gates) and of course her trustworthy and faithful dog, Brandon. I too got emotional when I saw the episode of "I Love You Brandon". I don't have any kids yet, but when I do I KNOW they will be hooked on Punky just like I was. Just all the other reviews I CANNOT wait for Season's 2-4 to be released. Hopefully, they will be released before the year's out!!!! Punky ROX 4 EVER!!!!

Studio Offers Replacement DVD For Missing Cartoon Chapter! July 14 2004
By Servo
Format:DVD
As another reviewer previously mentioned, the cartoon on the first disc, "Glomer's Story", was missing the end chapter of the story. On the DVD, the story "ended" (kind-of) with no resolution, and it didn't make sense.

The people at Shout! Factory, who put this set out, offer the following solution for this:

"For people who ask, we'll send them a DVD of the full "Glomer's Story" cartoon (it was missing a chapter on the original DVD). E-mail to info@shoutfactory.com
To make sure those of you writing and asking for the DVD have in fact made the purchase, we will need a copy of your receipt for the purchase sent to:

Shout! Factory
2042-A Armacost Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90025
ATTN: PUNKY/GLOMER

Thanks. As soon as it is received, we will email you that we have it and will send out the DVD of Glomer's Story in its entirety."

If you purchased by online e-tailer, they should accept the packing slip that came with your order. Be sure to send a photocopy of the receipt or packing slip, and keep the original for your own records!

Best $26.00 I've ever spent! July 9 2004
By Becky
Format:DVD
I have been waiting for this show to come out on DVD for years. I just turned 21 years old on july 1st so Punky was definately my idol. I even dressed up as her for Halloween in 1989...punky wasn't all that popular by then and i was upset when i didnt win a prize downtown for the costume because i looked exactly like her. (even had a stuffed brandon lol). Anyways, Punky was the one show that meant the most to me growing up. I remember when it was shown on the family channel until 1994. So its been 10 years since I had really watched Punky. I was thrilled to see that they included the cartoon episodes of Punky on the DVD. I loved those as much as I loved the show. I had the first 3 episodes (punky gets a home) on tape along w/2 cartoon episodes that my dad had taped for me years ago. Its nice to know that I can keep this DVD for my kids to see. That show changed my life and watching the 1st season episodes brings back so many memories. I feel so old watching them! I think that everyone should go out and buy this because it's worth it. I hope they bring out the next 3 seasons because I want them all.

Woefully incomplete
How they can call this "the COMPLETE first season" is beyond me. It's missing the controversial Episode 24, in which Punky is kidnapped by Manitoban separatists. Read more
