Product Description

From the Inside Flap

High Quality, Low Risk: Beyond Blue Chip

Purple Chips offers a unique method of making money in the stock market, focusing on high-quality, low-risk stocks.

Blue chip stocks are easy to find. Many analysts will provide lists of companies that they believe are safe in uncertain economic times. But among the blue chips exist a number of purple chips—great companies that make the best opportunities for investors.

Purple Chips shows you how to identify an exceptional company by making a quick visual inspection of certain factors in their earnings history. Focusing on long-term track records, Purple Chips explains three simple criteria that distinguish purple chip stocks from ones that are merely blue chip.

Purple Chips is also a strategic tool: it teaches you when to buy and when to sell, with the goal of making modest gains often and losing only occasionally—an investment plan that suits the psychology of most investors far better than losing often and winning big occasionally.

In seven succinct chapters that include numerous examples, graphs, and charts, author John Schwinghamer presents a simple and effective way to succeed in investing in the stock market.

I don't know a whole lot about investing, but this book was very helpful in making concepts simple and easy to understand. With plenty of graphs, tables and hand-written notes, it is an enjoyable and informative read. It is also very to-the-point and provides examples without dragging on or over-complicating things.

All in all, I felt I learned a lot and was inspired from reading this book, and will be more confident in my own future investing endeavors.

While my father was an investor in the stock market in the 1960's, it seemed to me a mysterious activity at the best of times. I used to watch him hit the market page in the evening paper first before the news of the day. He seemed comfortable buying and selling resulting in my belief that the stock market was for "real men only!"

Then I read "Purple Chips" - a book that de-mystifies the ways and means of the stock market and investing. Terminology is clearly explained along with diagrams of company success and decline that is easy to understand. Finally, a book that explains that there is money to be made and that there isn't a limited amount to be further divided by smarter people.

I wish this book had been available 30 years ago!

So as God said "Go forward, be fruitful and multiply" this book says "Go forward, be confident and make money!"

This book is a great way to bring investors into high quality trading ideas with some discipline, focus and simplicity.
The section on investor psychology was bang on, and is almost a crucial backdrop before anyone embarks on this trading and investing journey.
The concept of "valuation reset" is another biggie which tells investors to follow up and stay on their toes.
The granular attention to trading detail is laudable, but having over 10 pages on trading Abbott Labs may test the readers passion and obsession!
Also, there should have had a chapter illustrating "fallen Purple chips" that get booted out of the club; and why it happens and how to react when it does happen.
Readers want to hear about one's failures and weaknesses as well, and how to deal with those events and situations.
Maybe this work is setting us up for a sequel!
Congrats John!

Topical to be reminded that singles and doubles are better and that getting paid while you wait is very rewarding.
An ingenious approach at understanding and seeing valuation explained so that it can be easily mastered by an average investor.
The examples are well chosen and competently illustrate the theory.
An innovative discussion on when to buy and when to sell; that alone is well worth the book.
In summary an excellent contribution to the world of investing.

This book changed my life! It's clear, concise, and couldn't be better. I was completely confused about finances and wouldn't even pretend to understand what my portfolio manager would tell me. Now I'm asking the right questions, made a few simple changes, and feel a lot better about the whole experience.
