Book Description

Aug. 31 2010

When Washington, D.C.’s National Counterterrorism Center is struck by a series of devastating explosions, the results are catastrophic—185 killed, including public officials and CIA employees. Such an act of extreme violence calls for extreme measures—and elite counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp, joining forces with trusted team member Mike Nash, finds himself in the frustrating position of having to illustrate the realities of national security to government officials up in arms over the agents who rushed in to save countless American lives. Meanwhile, with three al Qaeda terrorists still at large and Nash traumatized by the horrors he witnessed during the attack, Rapp must help his friend while threading his way through the naysayers on Capitol Hill—and silently, swiftly, do what he must for the sake of his country and the pursuit of honor.

"Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem." -- Psalm 51:18

If you haven't read any Mitch Rapp thrillers, don't start with this one. At least go back and read Extreme Measures which contains the events that precipitate the events and actions in this story.

Mitch Rapp gets a bad rap from some people who object to his use of violence. As Pursuit of Honor makes clear, Rapp is a utilitarian, someone who calculates what provides the greatest good for the greatest number . . . rather than someone who follows a fixed moral course regardless of consequences. John Stuart Mill would approve.

I particularly enjoyed the ways that Vince Flynn has Mitch Rapp literally turning in mid-action to change directions after he perceives a better opportunity for accomplishing his aims of protecting the U.S. from terrorists and those in the U.S. who try to stop or slow down his defensive tactics. I cannot remember a better book in the series for explaining the moral position that powers Rapp's decisions and actions.

The book also provides the kind of behind-the-scenes look into the kinds of dilemmas that anti-terrorism experts must face on a daily basis, such as locating the bad guys before they do any more harm, avoiding the exposure of valuable sources, staying free of political enemies, and not being accused of crimes. I suspect that a moral philosopher could use enough situations from this book to hold interesting discussions concerning what is the right thing to do that could go on for years.

But this book isn't a book about talk: There's plenty of action.

In tracking down the remaining terrorists involved in the attacks on Washington, D.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Protagonist March 13 2010
By Toni Osborne TOP 100 REVIEWER
Book 10 in the Mitch Rapp series

Strap yourself in; the story moves rapidly, lots of thrilling action, no dull or sluggish moments. This latest installment puts Mr Flynn at the top of his game, making him one of the kings in this genre of writing.

"Pursuit of Honor" follows "Extreme Measures" in it a series of cataclysmic events occurred and Rapp and Nash managed to thwart the terrorist attack with grave consequences to the first responders. In the aftermath, Rapp's priorities are to deal with the laps in security and help Nash get over the psychological effects of loosing his close colleagues.

The mastermind behind the attacks Karim with his associates are on the run across America leaving a bloody trail that will sooner or later proved to be their Achilles' heel. After dealing with the oversight committee, Rapp turns his attention on Karim and manoeuvres Nash into a safer position, beneficial to all. Unfortunately Rapp underestimates the task at hand and once again he needs to put his life on the line to save his nation along with his friend.

This thriller highlights the current political situation regarding homeland and national security into a fictional plot that brings out the issues of terrorism and the extreme methods in dealing with America's safety. The characterization seems to sum up the public's perception of the CIA... Take any means but reach the objective...some agree, some disagree...Flynn has developed a strong protagonist in Rapp, we may or may not agree with his approach but as a reader it is an adrenaline rush...

I have read the entire "Mitch Rapp" series and enjoyed every novel, this latest is no exception. The characters have evolved with great detail through the series, I would suggest to read the novels in order to better appreciate the writer's portrayal of each one. There is no doubt "Pursuit of Honor" is a sequel to "Extreme Measures".

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Mitch Rapp story Aug. 6 2010
There are few assasins who are as likeable as Mitch Rapp. He's deadly, to be sure, but he's also got his his vulnerable, human side and throughout his action series, Vince Flynn, gives us plenty of opportunity to bond with his hero. This book is an excellent read, with lots of action, lots of suspense, and lots of, well, killing. But we're on the side of the angels with Mitch and while we deplore the politics that seem bent on destroying the USA from the inside, we're relieved to know that Mitch Rapp is there to protect the country and its citizens. One can't help wondering with a little shiver of fear if there really are men like Mitch working behind the scenes in the real world and one might even hope there are. It's hard to imagine any one person having all of the skills and daring of this character, however. But that's what makes heroes such fun to read about. If you like action adventure, this is a book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another in the action packed Rapp series! Aug. 2 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When reading Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp novels, I try to imagine which movie actor would be best suited to fill Rapp's shoes. So far I have come up with a blank because Rapp is "one-of-a-kind". The storylines are always action packed, full of twists and turns, politically animated, and take place in geographical locations that are currently topical.
