Give Harry a Chance,
By
Ce commentaire est de: Pussy Cats: 25th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
Seeing as how this work has been torn to shreds by other Nilsson devotees, I can only add that the recording is indeed highly uneven, yet there are many redeeming moments as well. The album is dominated by Nilsson, and whether or not he shredded his vocal chords in the process, he makes numerous outstanding contributions, particularly in the renditions of "Save the Last Dance for Me," which is equal to or better than any other cover of that memorable song. "Black Sails" is a wonderfully orchestrated bit of musical drama, full of the true yearning andmelancholy that Harry was so adept at conveying. The same could be said for "Don't Forget Me." "Mucho Mongo" is built around forgettable, but innocuous lyrics and a beautifully rendered melody line. Other songs, such as "The Flying Saucer Song" and "Down by the Sea" probably were indeed accompanied by bouts of the d.t.s. This still ranks as a must-have possession for true Nilsson fans, if only for the four or five gems that don't appear in other collections.

Lost weekend, lost voice, a few choice cuts,

As the first review mentions, this is the "Lost Weekend" album where Nilsson and Lennon went on the mother of all benders. As the other reviews lament, Nilsson's voice is not up to par with previous efforts. In fact, Nilsson did serious damage to his vocal chords during this recording as a result of the off-the-scale drinking. His voice was never the same, and subsequent recordings were lame in comparison until his last full album, Knilsson, which features some beautiful singing within a more limited range.Pussy Cats is not totally a lost cause, however. "Many Rivers" blends a powerfully soaring vocal with Lennon's Mind Games-type production. "Don't Forget Me" is one of the most heart-wrenching yet funny songs about divorce you will ever hear (it's been covered by Marshall Crenshaw and Marianne Faithful). The slow but forceful pace of "Save the Last Dance For Me" wonderfully showcases the charm of Nilsson's voice. While not exactly a worthy follow-up to the brilliantly hilarious "Coconut" from Schmilsson, or one of his last semi-hits, "Daybreak," "Mucho Mungo" pours yet another sweet melody over a calypso-esque feel. Even though Nilsson blasted his voice on this album, you get the feeling from his raucous cover of "Loop De Loop" that at least he had a lot of fun doing it.

A sad document from two major talents,
By
Ce commentaire est de: Pussy Cats: 25th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
I love Harry Nilsson, really I do. There's more than a little genius scattered among his catalogue, and nearly all his albums have something to offer, even the spottier later era stuff. That said, Pussy Cats is really a travesty. A waste of Nilsson's hiterto amazing voice... And a waste of Lennon's formidable talents. Barely passable effort applied to barely passable material... This has remained in print, on-and-off over the years, primarily for the Lennon name in the marquee. But there isn't another proper Nilsson album (or Lennon album, for that matter) that I would hesitate to recommend over this one... This album makes me sad, but for all the wrong reasons. dap
