Product Description

Book Description

It is September 1940—the cruelest year of war for Britain's civilians as the Luftwaffe mercilessly blitz their cities. In Pearl Street, near Liverpool's vital docks, families struggle to cope the best they can. A nasty surprise for ever-cheerful dressmaker Brenda Mahon, and flighty Sean's love for little Alice, show how life goes on even when it appears to be falling apart. Yet while Eileen Costello tries to hide her ruined hopes of happiness with Nick and do her best by the husband she hoped had gone forever, Ruth Singerman returns, having escaped from Austria. Even the joy of seeing her father again cannot make up for the bitter loss of her children.

About the Author

Maureen Lee had numerous short stories published and a play professionally staged before her first novel was published. She now writes full time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, Nov 4 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Put Out the Fires (Paperback)
This is a good story. It is the second book I have read of Maureen Lee, my first being The House by Princes Park which I enjoyed more than this one. Having said that, this was a good read and I enjoyed it. The characters are believable, just every day folk getting by from day to day during a terrible time in history. I would recommend this book.

This is really a wonderful book! Especially if you like WWII books taking place on the British home front. The era is described in great detail, and the characters are believable. You feel that you are on a journey with them. At the end of the book, I felt sad to put the book down and say goodbuy to my new "friends".

Once again, nothing but praise for Maureen Lee's books. Loved the characters and how they interacted during a time of great stress. The plot flows and you can hardly put the book down.
