Have you ever thought inside the box? These band-sawn boxes could be the most intriguing and fun projects you've ever made.
Author Jeff Vollmer describes his boxes as key-and-slidecut a dovetail key, cut a slider piece, cut another key, cut another slider. That's the puzzle or "combination" you use to get to the chamber or heart of the box.
Then you cut out the guts of the box to create a chamber. But wait, there's more! Then you cut another box from the guts, then another box or drawer from those pieces, then another and maybe another until things get too small to handle safely.
Any type wood can be used to make these boxeswood with holes, cracks, splits, insect and wormholes, spalting and burls. Jeff calls these flaws "opportunities" to become creative.
Please note that the digital version of this book does not include the accompanying DVD.

Not what you expect,

The book has very little in the way of words. It's just a series of photographs of someone cutting blocks of wood. You can follow it for the first 15-20 photos, then I got totally lost. I kind of get what he is doing, but it could have been written better. The idea's are cool, but could have been written much better. Also you should note that this book assumes that you have a 14" 1.5hp bandsaw. The author says that anything smaller will not be able to cut through the thickness of wood or have enough blade tension to cut straight. Sadly for me, he then goes on to say that any bandsaw larger than 14" won't work as you will not be able to get the 1/8" blade for it, and even if you custom order one, it won't track accurately and you will have problems. The book does come with a DVD but I didn't watch it as the book proved useless to me as I'm not buying a new bandsaw.

Not for beginners,

Most beginners will fail with this book as a guide. A good book for experienced people. I will put it aside for six months and do basic boxes , then come back to it and see how it is then

I have been making band saw boxes for years. Some of them have bordered on "puzzle" boxes but I always wanted something a little more in depth and thorough as far as instruction. When I saw that this book was being released I immediately reserved a copy and eagerly anticipated its arrival.I have yet to try all the designs in the book, more out of an equipment limitation than any lack of completeness on behalf of this book. The basic design is solid and once the basics are comprehended, further experimentation can follow. The only thing keeping this book from scoring a solid 5 stars is the fact that not every woodworker has the availability to use a paddle sander and a large vat of finish. There are other ways around these though so they aren't a major drawback. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has always wondered "How the heck do they do that?" The answers are in this book and its accompanying DVD. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful

I've been renewing this book over and over from my local library and it's about time I purchased it. Easy to follow instructions, great photos, well written.

I've not made a bandsawn box before although I have made "fine" boxes. The designs in this book are somewhat rustic but the boxes are visually interesting, relatively easy to master if you have confidence in your bandsaw skills (I still have 10 fingers and so does Jeff Volmer)and are FUN long after you apply the finish! The DVD is invaluable and I read the book, watched the DVD and then went back to reread the book with a clearer understanding of the steps (which are illustrated in the book with stills from the DVD).Safely using your bandsaw for these boxes is a bit of a challenge. I used clamps etc to grasp some of the smaller puzzle box pieces but sometimes, in order to be able to freely make the various "flowing" saw cuts, the saw guard is raised and a fair bit of blade is exposed close to your hands. However, with planning and concentration, these boxes can be safely executed by an adult woodworker. |
