Product Description

From Amazon.com

These are very good performances of a major set of Haydn String Quartets, played on period instruments and conveniently grouped on two CDs. The group plays Haydn with respect and dedication, careful attention to detail, and excellent balance, so that you can hear the ingenuity of Haydn's part writing. But I want more in my Haydn playing--a sense of adventure and discovery and a few surprises here and there. This playing is too smooth for surprises. If you want greater vigor, try the Tatrai Quartet on modern instruments performing Haydn, or the Salomon Quartet on period instruments performing the String Quartets, Opus 33, Nos. 1-3 and Opus 33, Nos. 4-6, and Op 42. --Leslie Gerber

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding, Nov 2 2002
This review is from: Qrts Op33 1/4/6 (Audio CD)
I disagree with the editorial review above. The playing here is incredibly searching and sensitive. It has plenty of bite when called for. Every phrase is shaped and articulated. It is as if the quartet is talking to you. Just extraordinary.

The recording is the best recording of a string quartet I own, and one of best recordings I have ever heard, period. Perfect balance and space.

Astounding. I am buying all of Mosaique's Haydn work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative Performances of the Russian Quartets, Dec 2 2011
By Bernard Michael O'Hanlon - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Qrts Op33 1/4/6 (Audio CD)
Ignore Leslie Gerber's advice above: it's a bum steer. While the Tatrai Quartet were a wonderful ensemble, reports that they were recorded inside a washing-machine for much of their cycle are credible; and needless to say the Salomon Quartet - the Masters of the Squeeze Box - salinize any repertoire they touch. The Festetics Quartet is also to be avoided in this domain (Haydn: String Quartets Op. 33 & 42): by comparison, they make the Simpson Desert seem like a wetland.

With its sister Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartets, Quatuors Opus 33 Nos. 2, 3 & 5 - Quatuor Mosaïques, this is the best survey of the Russian Quartets on the market. The three quartets on this disc may lack the magnetism of the Bird or the Joke but they are still masterpieces by any measure.

There are no better advocates of period practice than the Mosaiques Quartet; they play with poetry and poise. To sample the calibre of this music-making, listen to the fabulous slow movement of the B Minor where Haydn warps time itself: it is perfection, perfectly rendered.

Unlike their hapless Hungarian counterparts above, the Mosaiques are atmospherically recorded and balanced. This is a full priced CD and it is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vital Haydn, Oct 23 2011

Another solid set of performances from the QM, great recorded sound and presence. Very refined period tone, but not laid-back. I thought this was up to the high standards set by their acclaimed op. 20 recordings.
