This review is from: Quest of the Spider and the Polar Treasure (Print on Demand (Paperback))
"Quest" begins with lumber magnate Big Eric Danielsen and his lovely daughter Edna en route to New York City to meet up with Doc Savage, when an explosion causes them to land by parachute. They make it to New York by train and find their way to Doc's 86th floor sanctuary. They are dismayed to find that Doc is visiting his Fortress of Solitude when greeted by Ham, but Doc soon returns. Big Eric tells him of the Cult of the Gray Spider taking over southern lumber concerns, one of which is his Louisiana property. Doc leaves a message for the remainder of his team, and he and Ham accompany the Danielsens to Louisiana, meeting danger all the way. Monk, Long Tom, Johnny, and Renny arrive, and Doc hatches a plan to penetrate the swamps and find the mysterious Gray Spider.
For most of this book, the gang was separated and often taken captive, and spent more time with the sidekicks than with Doc. As a result, it suffered. It was still a lot of fun, but pale when compared with The Polar Treasure.
This story begins when Doc rescues famous blind violinist Victor Vale from a kidnapping attempt. Doc had come to see Vale play a symphony he composed, and happened to be on hand when the kidnappers made their move. Doc takes Vale to his apartment/office/lab and hears his story of a polar shipwreck and his rescue by a man named Ben O'Gard 20 years earlier. Vale had been on his way to meet O'Gard when O'Gard's enemy, Keelhaul de Rosa, tried to grab him. Doc suspects O'Gard is as much a pirate as de Rosa, and is soon proven right, so his gang hires a submarine to go in search of the treasure. There ensues high adventure and a series of double-crosses before it's said and done, all peppered by humorous dialogue all around. The story also closely follows Doc and, let's face it, he's starting to have the same effect on me as he does the gorgeous women who meet him in the books! He's the ultimate good guy. He vanquishes the last of the bad guys and sails home with the treasure, and had me hooked to the last page.
