Product Description

In a world torn apart by hatred and fear, only the strongest will survive… Short, fast-paced, and priced to go, this futuristic thriller is Tom Holt at his most compulsively readable. "There was one lying in the road when I got there. She was dead. No need to look up close. You can tell from twenty yards away, when they're lying like that." Nobody knows where they come from. Nobody knows what they want. The creatures are killing humans for meat, and nobody, it seems, can stop them. Now one man—a hunter by trade—has trapped one of the creatures. Under the ground, they face each other. And only one of them will get out alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would Have Been Better if Written Through the Eyes Style in Real Time, April 22 2011
By James N Simpson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Quick Read Someone Like Me (Paperback)
This is an okay through the eyes of the main character type read. A character who is a hunter of deadly hairy creatures with sharp claws who hunt humans and terrify the small village populations which remain on earth sometime in the future. A future were humans are terrified to go through tunnels (that we today call pedestrian underpasses, and subway stations) and into the large ruins of cities for fear of being disembowelled by the creatures who have taken residency there in between visits to the village to feast. The book has some interesting aspects such as the way future humans who have somehow gone back to living in huts and hunting with knives and swords, wonder and marvel at the way humans (or maybe some other species) built the tunnels and painstakingly put every little tile on the walls and floor just to keep their feet clean and dry. The obvious comparisons to the Pyramids and other historical things we don't really know much about but like to hypothesize that we do is quite interesting reading. What lets this 90 page short story down though, is that the main character is reminiscing about his battle with the two creatures, so you know he survives and gets out the tunnel. If you didn't know this then you'd have the added tension of will he make it out alive to enhance the story.

Someone Like Me, is part of the Quick Reads series of stand alone published short stories. If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads initiative, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books, to try fiction through cheap priced (current Quick Reads all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, but full of suspense, Jan 20 2008
By Lance Mitchell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Quick Read Someone Like Me (Paperback)
Someone Like Me by Tom Holt is a bloodthirsty, gripping thriller, which is set in the future but in a world that has regressed into almost primitive times. There is no electricity or transport system. The human race lives in fear of a race of aggressive beasts that hunt people for their flesh.
The hero, who is a hired hunter of the beasts, narrates the story in the first person. The quest of the hero and his colleagues is to eliminate all of the beasts before they can totally eliminate mankind.

The opening scene places the hero in the midst of recently inflicted carnage resulting from an attack by two of the beasts. It is not long before he finds himself trapped in dark underground tunnels with one of them. It is literally a case of kill or be killed.

The story moves at a very fast pace but the style may not be to the liking of all readers. Certainly, I would not recommend this book to anyone who faints at the first sight of blood, even if it is only in print. However, the twists at the end of the tale are worth waiting for and leave the reader deep in thought. The book took me less than ninety minutes to read, and is about the right length. Any more, and I would have begun to feel bored. Any less, and I would have felt slightly cheated.

I can't honestly say whether I would recommend it to a friend or not. That would depend on what I knew about the friend!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the Tom Holt Fan, Sep 6 2007
By Susan Prosser - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Quick Read Someone Like Me (Paperback)
I've read most of Tom Holt's books, and have a decided preference for the funny stuff. So this book's very dark tone was a bit of a surprise. Still, it was clearly a Holt book, and, very skillfully written. Just like the subtitle says, it's a quick read. This probably isn't the best book to start with if you've not read him before, because you won't be getting a true flavor of what Holt is like. Still, I really enjoyed the suspense (which was almost painful at times) and was completely pulled into the alternate future Holt has drawn.
