I picked up this disc at Jake's show, a week ahead of the official release. All I can say is: wow. This is a POWERHOUSE album.

There's a greater range of sounds this time, with some tracks using a limited instrumentation (and highlighting Jake's own excellent guitar playing). Jake's songwriting has always been amazing, but it's evolved by leaps and bounds... the songs on Quicksand are absolutely scintillating, both melodically and lyrically. As ever, it's music that refuses to be pigeon-holed, running a range through blues, rockabilly, jazz and hard rock... sometimes combining all of them in one song. Think Cab Calloway meets Jim Morrison... and you'll still fall short.

If you haven't tried Big Rude Jake yet, this is the place to start. Do NOT hesitate. If you like jazzy, infectious, intelligent music, you simply won't do any better. Be there first, before the rest of the world discovers this guy.

Now if only Jake would release a live album...

Quicksand by Big Rude Jake
not every one will have this album in there collection but I do. I like the strange and bizarre. This album has a mixture of new Orleans jazz, blues, folk, alternative country, and rock. Wide variety of instruments, horns, harmonica, fiddles, squeeze box, piano and guitar. there is much more to listen to on this album then you can imagine. it must be hard to play this music live. if your into something different, this is for you

This is a GREAT album Dec 7 2009

It's truly unfortunate that isn't keeping this album in stock. This is the best work so far by one of the best musicians you've never heard of. Part big-band jazz, part soulful ballads, part rock & roll, yet always totally weird and unique, Big Rude Jake is one of a kind.

At this moment, at least a few BRJ albums are listed as "in stock" on They're ALL good, with not a weak track in the entire catalog (definitely NOT something I'd say of very many bands). But Quicksand is by far the best, as well as the most accessible. Give it a try, you WILL be glad you did.
