4.0 out of 5 stars CSI before there was CSI July 22 2011
By Nostalgia Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER

Well before Bruckheimer's CSI franchise there was LA Coroner Dr. R. Quincy, seemingly forever on a one man crusade for truth and justice. Quincy M.E. was a character driven show with Jack Klugman effectively portraying the passionate & dedicated coroner, ably assisted by Sam Fujiyama. His close friend, restaurant owner Danny Tovo, his politically conflicted boss, Dr. Robert Asten, and his antagonistic LAPD colleague, Lt. Frank Monahan, round out the main weekly cast.

While the ensemble casts of the current CSI shows often rely heavily on subtle (if not outlandishly unlikely) forensics, Quincy's science tended to be more straightforward and accessible to the viewer. As well, Quincy, M.E. had simple plot lines and simple character dynamics, unlike the increasingly self-referential, self-involved and navel gazing CSI franchise.

This show was typical, formulaic '70s-'80s American TV fare, kept interesting by Klugman's portray of the irascible Quincy; classic Americana. Two box sets (Seasons 1 & 2; Season 3) have been released. I do hope they release the rest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just like I remembered ! May 1 2011
I used to watch Quincy when I was young and I wanted to become a medical examiner to catch bad guys. That didn't come true but I bought the DVDs to see if the serie was as good as I remembered and it is. I still like to watch Quincy in action. The forensics science was not what it is now but it doesn't matter. I like the way they bring up discussions or taboos like euthanesia or child abuse in certain episodes. Quincy is funny, sarcastic and challenge the authority for the greater good all the time. He's still the best !

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute joy March 11 2013

When I was a kid I wanted to be Quincy , because of this show I never lost my love of forensics. This show still holds up very well, I found my self enthralled and enchanted all over again.
If you were a fan back in the day then I promise you that you won't be disappointed.
My only issue is that the shows are on side A and side B, but turning the disc over somehow seems appropriate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dead Men Do Talk Feb. 20 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Writer-Producer Glen Larson puts another detective series for the thinking man head-to-head, so to speak, against the phenomenally successful, cerebral COLUMBO. QUINCY, M.E. has no front handle, either.

Doctor QUINCY's schtick is not his little grey cells alone, but forensic science to catch the murderer by evidence left in the corpus. In contrast with the solitary lieutenant's clever entrapment of the wily culprit, QUINCY is outfitted with a full cast of supporting characters to express his benevolent philosophy and moral indignation; there is his faithful lab assistant, his frustrated romantic interest, his officious department head always counting his beans, a mule-headed police lieutenant always prosecuting the wrong suspect, and his open-eared bartender with mob connexions. Everybody is always angry at everybody; Larson seems to think anger is interesting and human, but like salt, more than a little spoils the wroth.

A story of conflict between a lone man of principle upholding right against rule-bound authorities, this attractive package of 3 jewel cases holding double-sided DVDs is targetted to every enraged victim of blind bureaucracy. Did Larson miss anybody?

My dad watched this all the time and while it was already off the air when I began watching it I still enjoy it. Just picked it up for my dad for Christmas and I'm sure he will be happy. One of the first medical shows (if not the first).
