Now that holidays are behind us; the leftover turkey all but gone from the fridge; the tinsel and wrapping paper stored and the pine needles swept'and the January blahs in full swing' But what's that? Why, there's one more present sitting in the dark under the Christmas tree, still waiting to be opened. Go ahead, see what's inside, go on... 'I dare you'

Every year around December, we are subjected to the same tired old Christmas staples over and over: It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Santa Clause, A Charlie Brown Christmas, blah blah blah blah blah' It's enough to make you spew rum-laced eggnog all over the living room carpet. But whilst each film is calculated to foster warm fuzzy feelings of goodwill and holiday cheer, few filmmakers seem to be interested in showing the cold clammy underbelly of the Santa mythology.

Which is just what director Jalmari Helander has done. And Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is the result, God bless 'im!

Like Grimm's Fairy Tales, the original source material can be horrifically dark and nightmare-inducing. Santa was not the rosy-cheeked benevolent plushy we see cuddling your little ones on his lap in the Mega Mall. According to legend, he also kidnapped and punished naughty children with a bloodthirsty vengeance. Politically incorrect today, perhaps, but back then it was perfectly acceptable.

Now, don't get me wrong. This is not your typical schlocky serial slasher Santa. Not even close. In fact, I would even go so far to as to say that Rare Exports is a kid's movie (with certain reservations for you parents with delicate sensibilities*).

You will love this unusual dark Chrismas Story that flips the Santa Claus myth around!

In this scandinavian tale, instead of rewarding good spoiled children of America, Santa Claus punishes bad children around the world... by eating them! No need for boxing day, marketing and X-Mas shopping in this holiday's version! So the eating disorder of good ol' St-Nick got him captured and buried in a mountain, until some rich, oil dude has the brilliant idea of finding "it" to... keep it for himself!?...

Don't wanna spoil anything, but as soon as movie starts moving faster, the suspence becomes really tense and the athmosphere of this village lost in the snow transforms into a real X-Mas nightmare that will have you emotionnaly participate actively. Twists and turns await you and the ending will hit you in the face!

Add this title to your X-Mas wish list and prey the legend is dead wrong about your favorite holiday!

this movie definitely surprised me at how well rounded it was. The acting was all very good from the adults to the outstanding actor who played Pietri. The kid was great. The whole vibe of the movie had both a quirky and creeping feeling to it. The kid was constantly afraid of Santa and the precautions he takes were very amusing and tongue in cheek funny. There were also some offsetting depressing vibes that made you care about the characters and I was not expecting that. The emotions in this film are so widespread that it definitely stands out as above average Christmas film, not even just a Christmas horror which is the reason why I watched it. This is a great Christmas movie to watch with the whole family or just by yourself.
