Up to 25 programmable activities:
|Activities (or macros) let you condense multi-step actions, like setting up your home theater to watch a DVD, into a single voice action (traditionally requiring multiple key presses). But this remote goes one step further and gives you the power to execute these activities using voice commands you pick. |
Volume and transport key punch-through
The RCA Voice Control Remote offers two ways of minimizing the number of button presses required for everyday actions:
Controls up to 6 devices:TV
By default, the remote "punches through" volume commands to the device programmed for the TV button, regardless of which mode you're in. This means you can control TV volume while you're watching a DVD or cable/satellite programming without having to press the TV button first.
|Smart Source is a patented technology that lets you decide which entertainment device you want to use for common functions such as volume, channel or disc playback control. Once you've set up Smart Source, these buttons are "locked" to the device you use them with, regardless of which device mode you're in. |
Smart Source locking is most useful if you use single devices in your home theater to change channels, control volume and play/stop/pause DVDs. If, for example, your TV controls volume for your entire home theater, set Smart Source control for the volume keys to your TV.
Smart Source can also simplify voice programming, by reducing the number of button presses required to perform a function.

Not all its cracked up to be.
After everything was working I took some time to look through the manual a little deeper, and I can tell you now that all of the complaints posted here about this remote are for the most part unfounded. These people simply didn't read the manual, and that's NOT the remotes fault. It only goes through batteries quickly if you don't program it correctly. A little common sense is in order here. It uses voice commands, so of course it needs to hear (listen) for your voice. There is a button that turns this feature on/off OR you can simply clap your hands to turn the remote on. This way it saves the batteries. You can even set the sensitivity of the mic (which at this price point is a very welcomed surprise). You do NOT have to say "remote control" to get it to respond, but you do have to give it a name so it knows that you want to give it a command. How else would it know that you're talking to it? There is a feature which allows you to name it ANYTHING that you want (yes, anything). So if you want to call your remote "Bob" - and you want to turn your TV on - then you would say "Bob" and it would make a sound to let you know that it's listening, and then you would say "TV Power" and the TV would magically turn on, all without touching anything. Pretty flawless actually. You can control a fair amount of things this way - all without ever touching the remote. I named my remote "Computer" after the computer that is in the TV show Star Trek. Now when I wake up in the morning I say "Computer, TV power" and the TV turns on. That's exactly what I wanted in a voice remote, and for a measly 15 bucks I don't think anyone should be complaining about this remote. I only took off one star because you can only teach it to do a pre-set amount of things, and after you start using voice commands you'll want to control everything this way, but other than that it's great. It DOES do what it says it does AS LONG as you read the manual and program it correctly. As I use this remote more and learn of its extra features I will update this review from time to time. This is definitely the best bargain currently on Amazon. It's not going to cook you dinner or do the laundry when you tell it to, BUT for turning on/off your TV, controlling the volume, changing channels, etc it does do these common remote commands flawlessly - all with just your simple voice command. Seriously, it's less than 15 bucks, life is good...
