3.0 out of 5 stars OK for the price Nov. 26 2011

Obviously a talented writer with an excellent well developed main character in Jake Lassiter. The plot becomes unbelievable at times with Jake going to such extremes to retrieve his client's bonds. Also, Jake's romantic interest in the female villan goes too far. I really wanted to like Jake, but I couldn't believe such a strong character could be so naive.

5.0 out of 5 stars RIPTIDE shows why Levine wins writing awards Jan. 5 2015
By David Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
RIPTIDE is an excellent example of why Levine has been nominated (and won) multiple writing awards.

It's also obvious Levine has spent a lot of time in south Florida, writing the culture of the area with genuine authority. Having lived there many years, it's fun to "go home" again for a while by reading Levine's LASSITER books.

Excellent writing, super storytelling, and compelling situations make for a book that's well worth spending money on.

4.0 out of 5 stars RIPTIDE July 6 2014

This is the first Jake Lassiter book l have read. He is an interesting character, but did seem a little shallow in his love interest. I will read more to see if he learns from his past. The insight into Hawaii was great, a lot of good info.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun book but ending leaves much to be desired Nov. 21 2014

Fun book but ending leaves much to be desired. Poor Jake Lassiter is portrayed through out as a hapless fool without any redemption at the end. Gets tiring to read a story where the protagonist never grows.

3.0 out of 5 stars The main character sets a disconnected, bored vibe from the beginning and never picks up steam. Dull reading. Dec 29 2014

I want to like the character in these books but something about Jake Lassiter, an ex-pro football linebacker turned lawyer, annoys me. He sounds tough, talks tough, is described as looking tough but his actions dictate otherwise. Mostly he seems disconnected and lazy. In this book he's working multiple cases, in constant danger and has fallen in love with an edgy criminal but he seems much more interested in windsurfing. The other stuff seems like boring necessities he forced to deal with in order to keep windsurfing on the weekends. I get the feeling that his heart isn't into it and I feel like I'm struggling along with him...to finish the book that is. Then Jake can get back to doing what he loves. It ain't working for a living.
