Sweet Take on Wizard of Oz, Mar 24 2010
This review is from: RUBY'S SLIPPERS (Paperback)
Who doesn't love The Wizard of Oz? Perhaps no one as much as the narrator of Ruby's Slippers, Dottie Meyers, whose grandmother worked on set with Judy Garland during the making of the movie. Dottie has grown up a Kansas farm girl whose father left the family when she was just a child. Her sister, Abby, is currently making her mark in Hollywood, and the girls' mother, Ruby, has recently died. When Abby comes home to visit, Dottie finds her searching through their mother's belongings in the cellar in the middle of the night. What's her highrolling sister after? But then a tornado comes to this Kansas farm, and Dottie awakens in a recovery facility to discover her elusive father has been to visit and left her a pair of ruby slippers. Could these be the ruby slippers from the movie? When Dottie recovers, she and three friends set off to find her father, while others, including her sister, pursue in search of the slippers. Will Dottie find her heart's desire? As you can see, the story is rich in parallels to the famous movie, an irony not lost on Dottie herself. Sometimes I got a little distracted trying to remember what this or that bit might line up with from the movie, but Ruby's Slippers is its own tale. Ive been crazy busy the past few weeks and so I've read this novel a chapter or two a day just before bed. I stayed up until nearly midnight (okay, that's late for me!) the last night to finish, not because I was on the edge of my seat from suspense-it's not that kind of book-but because I wanted to see how Leanna Ellis brought Dottie's inner journey to its conclusion.

Beautiful novel about the value of finding home, Mar 6 2009
By Christina Lockstein "Christy's Book Blog" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: RUBY'S SLIPPERS (Paperback)
Ruby's Slippers by Leanna Ellis is a haunting story of a woman's quest to know her earthly father and in doing so discovers her Heavenly Father. Dottie Meyers has lived her entire life on the same small Kansas farm where her mother and grandmother were born. Her sister Abigail fled their small town for the bright lights of Hollywood and only returns to the farm when she wants something. So Dottie isn't completely surprised to find Abby searching through their mother's things during one of her visits and then leave without a word the following morning. She doesn't have time to consider the mystery, because a tornado whips through the farm destroying everything and leaving Dottie in a three month long coma. When she wakes up, she sees things in surprisingly bright colors, starts humming songs she can't remember the names to, and finds a pair of ruby slippers by her bed that were left by her long-lost father. Dottie takes the slippers and goes on a quest to find him and to discover why he abandoned their family over thirty years ago. On the way, she picks up three friends with journeys of their own. Ellis very cleverly plays on the conceit of the title. The slippers are supposedly from The Wizard of Oz, and several themes from the movie are used throughout the book, including Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I found myself looking for specific plot elements from the movie and was completely delighted with how Ellis used some of them and twisted others making them all her own. The book never becomes a parody or silly; Ellis handles the similarities carefully to please fans of the movie without annoying anyone who isn't. While Dottie doesn't exactly discover there's no place like home, she learns what the word really means. I loved how Ellis writing reflects whatever Dottie is going through, from the no-nonsense style in Kansas to almost dreamlike when she first wakes up to clarity as Dottie makes personal discoveries. This powerful novel brought a smile to my face.

A Cute Retelling of an Iconic Film, Jan 22 2010
By Becky at "One Literature Nut" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: RUBY'S SLIPPERS (Paperback)
Although I am not necessarily a "Wizard of Oz" fan, I thought the cover and premise of this book sounded cute and fun. The new idea of taking a commonly loved or known story and remaking it, or even writing a sequel to it, can be a novelty at times. This retelling of this iconic film is interesting, and fun to draw up the similarities as you read. Told from Dottie's point of view, we watch this woman of 35 (ironically my own age), drift into a seemingly life of retirement. She seemed much older than 35, and this is heightened after her accident when she is placed in a "recovery facility" that seemed similar to a retirement home. The first half of the book felt disjointed, and it was difficult for me to attach to many of the characters; however, once I reached her recovery point, and she had made friends and decided to hit the road in search of her father, I felt much more connected to the characters and their journey. While slightly predictable, and characters that I didn't always feel I understood or should care about, there is a cute, light-hearted story here as well. The romance is a tad syrupy for my taste, but I realize that might be what I was walking into, and should have realized it from the beginning. There is a sense of resolution in the story, so you do end feeling as if the book has come full circle, which is satisfying. Overall, I would say that the story is cute and entertaining, and although some characters, for me, were difficult to attach to, their comparisons from the film are fun to consider as you read.

Simply Delightful!, April 19 2012

Ruby's Slippers By Leanna Ellis Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance I absolutely loved this book. I give it 5 stars, and I don't readily give out 5 stars. Ruby's Slippers is rich, entertaining, and definitely fun. The characters are very likable, interesting and unique, even quirky, each in their own way. This is the second novel I have read by Leanna Ellis, and I have to say, she has made it to might "favorite authors" list. The story in this book is about a young women, Dottie, who is trying to sort out her feelings, and the choices that she has made in her life. With the "ruby slippers" she sets out to find the thing, or things, that have been missing in her life, and in the end, she finds what she has always been looking for. The story takes on a rich and vibrant tone as the author takes us on a journey that most of us can relate to in our own lives. There are lots of twists and turns and "Ruby's Slippers" is a very fun, positive and engaging story. It is a very touching read that inspires us to appreciate the life that we have been given to trust that there is a plan, a good plan, for our futures, and to look forward with joy to what comes next in our lives. As I read this story, and I couldn't put it down, my own faith in God was increased, and it helped me to understand some of my own ways of thinking when it comes to trust and believing the promises of God. Leanna Ellis has a unique voice, and is able to describe people, places, and things with such intrigue, cleverness, and literary art. She is very creative and smart, you can see it in her writings. I think most women young or old will absolutely adore "Ruby's Slippers". Maybe even some men would like it too. I felt so good while reading it and very satisfied at the end. . So far, I have read "Facelift" (which was excellent too), and now "Ruby's Slippers", by Leanna Ellis, and I am so looking forward to reading many more by her. I think I am going to read, "Elvis Takes A Back Seat" next!
