RACE, CLASS, AND, GENDER, includes many interdisciplinary readings. The author's selection of very accessible articles show how race, class, and gender shape people's experiences, and help students to see the issues in an analytic, as well as descriptive way. The book also provides conceptual grounding in understanding race, class, and gender; has a strong historical and sociological perspective; and is further strengthened by conceptual introductions by the authors. Students will find the readings engaging and accessible, but may gain the most from the introduction sections that highlight key points and relate the essential concepts. Included in the collection of readings are narratives aimed at building empathy, and articles on important social issues such as prison, affirmative action, poverty, immigration, and racism, among other topics.
About the Author
Margaret L. Andersen, raised in Oakland, California; Rome, Georgia; and Boston, is Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her B.A. from Georgia State University. She is the author of Thinking About Women: Sociological Perspectives on Sex and Gender (Allyn and Bacon) and the best-selling Wadsworth text, Race, Class, and Gender: An Anthology (with Patricia Hill Collins). She is also the author of On Land and On Sea: A Century of Women in the Rosenfeld Collection and Living Art: The Life of Paul R. Jones, African American Art Collector. She has recently served as Vice President of the American Sociological Association from which she has also received the prestigious Jessie Bernard Award. She has also been awarded the SWS Feminist Lecturer Award, given annually by SWS (Sociologists for Women in Society) to a social scientist whose work has contributed to improving the status of women in society. She currently serves as Chair of the National Advisory Board of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity at Stanford University. She has served as the Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Science and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Delaware, where she has also won the University?s Excellence in Teaching Award. She lives on the Elk River in Maryland with her husband Richard Rosenfeld.
Patricia Hill Collins is a Distinguished University Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland at College Park, and Charles Phelps Taft Emeritus Professor of African American Studies and Sociology at the University of Cincinnati. She is the author of numerous articles and books including BLACK FEMINIST THOUGHT: KNOWLEDGE, CONSCIOUSNESS, AND THE POLITICS OF EMPOWERMENT, which won the Jessie Bernard Award of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and the C. Wright Mills Award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems; and BLACK SEXUAL POLITICS: AFRICAN AMERICANS; GENDER AND THE NEW RACISM, which won ASA's 2007 Distinguished Publication Award. Her latest book is ANOTHER KIND OF PUBLIC EDUCATION: RACE, SCHOOLS, THE MEDIA AND DEMOCRATIC POSSIBILITIES forthcoming in 2009. She will serve as the 100th President of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in 2009. Dr. Collins received her B.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Brandeis University, and her M.A.T. from Harvard University.

This book was amazing in its scope and varying perspectives on issues concerning "minority" Americans. Both editors and incredible and I personally am really looking forward to reading Patricia Hill Collins' lastest book, Black Sexual Politics.

This book is very interesting...in that it has different articles that point out the social inequalities that we may not see in our society. The articles have different view points that explain what the author is trying to introduce to its readers. I think this book is very interesting and it helps point out some issues in our society that we may not ordinarily see.

Text books are really dry and hard to read (for me) but this one was really good and I actually learned a lot. If you have to buy this book, don't freak out it isn't bad - I even kept mine when the course was over :)
