This made-for-TV historical drama is a United States-Canada co-production that examines a bit of two countries' shared history. It looks at the underground railroad that helped fugitive slaves flee the U.S. to freedom in Canada in the mid-1800s. The story focuses on a couple of escaped slaves, played by Canadian actress Janet Bailey and American actor Courtney B. Vance, as they make their way toward freedom. Loosely inspired by a the young-adult book
Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker, this starts out a tad dry but soon picks up and becomes more compelling as it goes along. It's nicely even-handed, as well, showing that both blacks and whites were involved in the underground railroad, working together, and not just one group or the other. Directed by Don McBrearty, the inherent power of the story and the subject matter carries it over occasional obviousness.
