Radical: Taking back your faith from the American Dream is a dangerous book written by a dangerous man - David Platt. As Platt states from the outset, "you and I can choose to continue with business as usual in the Christian life and in the church as a whole, enjoying success based on the standards defined by the culture around us. Or we can take an honest look at the Jesus of the bible and dare to ask what the consequences might be if we really believed him and really obeyed him" (pg 3). What is so dangerous about that? The question assumes that most of us don't really believe and don't really obey Jesus. And the sad reality is that we don't. In the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who Platt quotes, "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." Platt unpacks the biblical gospel and reveals the fact that "the gospel does not prompt you into mere reflection; the gospel requires a response" (pg 21).

Radical is nine chapters, and at 217 pages (excluding end notes and acknowledgements) it can be read in one sitting. I know because I read it in one sitting; it was that good and engaging. There were plenty of times, as Russell Moore said in his endorsement, that I wanted to put it down because I was "uncomfortably targeted by the Holy Spirit." David Platt doesn't just talk the talk in this book; he walks the walk. Every chapter is woven with the experiences of one who not only asked the questions, but searched for the answers. Platt is a "doer".

There really is no "safe" chapter in this book. Page after page you are confronted with two pictures; Biblical Christianity and North American Christianity. One fact leaps out time and time again - "one of these things is not like the other.

I first picked up RADICAL in the spring of 2011, read the first chapter and put it down because I knew God was going to call me to something huge after reading it. I picked it up in the fall of that year and let's just say my "Christian" world was changed! God called me out of my comfortable Christianity and has set me on a path and adventure with Him that has me excited and scared spit-less! I recently resigned my position at the church I had been a part of for 18 years and God moved me to a new place and is taking me on the ride of my life! The one things that has been clear to me after reading this book and actually stepping out in faith to live this RADICAL life that Jesus calls us to is this...THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!
RADICAL is a must read in my books...no pun intended! ;)

The title alone had me hooked, let alone the subtitle. Radical living for Christ means seeing the Gospel with fresh eyes and then allowing that same Gospel to transform everything about us; our goals, ambitions, resources and hopes.

However, living in a country that is wealthier than the other 99% of the world (America and Canada specifically) can very easily color the way in which we read, interpret and apply the Gospel message. Time and time again, Jesus called His disciples (including you and me) to self-less abandonment and to value others more than we do our ourselves. In essence, in the case of disciples, Jesus was far more concerned with quality than quantity. In discipleship, He demanded those who wanted to follow Him to seriously consider the cost before taking that step.

Yet, as Platt reiterated over and over again, "we are giving in to the dangerous temptation to take the Jesus of the Bible and twist him into a version of Jesus we are more comfortable with. A nice, middle class, American Jesus." As a result, we have to ask ourselves the question, "how much of our understanding of the Gospel is American (and Canadian) and how much is biblical?" And, "is materialism a blind spot in our Christianity today?"

As he points out, however, the cost of twisting the Gospel to fit into our materialistic ideals is far greater than the true costs of discipleship associated with the call to follow Jesus. We lose and the world loses as well.

From there, Platt takes on us a journey of rediscovering the Gospel once more, or perhaps for the very first time. Littered with real life stories and honest appraisal, he lays out for us a call to recapture the essence of authentic discipleship; one that Jesus Himself communicated throughout the Gospel accounts.

I have not read a better comparison than this. One that challenges each of us on so many levels. This book is one that had caused expanded thinking for me and I have referred friends to it. To truly embrace David's message you need to have an open mind and a Christ filled heart.

It's time the people of God in North America step up to the plate and be what God requires us to be.

I am on this journey and am asking God to help me and those he has lead to me to be all that He wants us to be.

Really challenging book on North American materialism and the call to follow Jesus radically in a prosperity driven world. It will change how you think about "stuff" and the pursuit of more "stuff". Discipleship requires a radical response. This book will give you a taster of what that looks like.
