Unfortunately, Joel's privileged knowledge of Kolberg creates roadblocks for the police that may make the case even harder to solve. Kalla never matches the breakneck pace of his previous books, and the integration of Ashman's memories with present action is sometimes awkward. Yet there's a solid readership for this high-concept mix of sordid content and ramped-up suspense. Ridley Pearson does it better than Kalla, but Pearson's fans looking for something new may want to try this one. Stephanie Zvirin
