3.0 out of 5 stars Not the story I hoped for:, Nov 17 2009
By SusieQ - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Rainbow Promise (Paperback)
I liked The Rainbow Season so much, that probably anything written as a sequel to it was bound to be a letdown to me.

THE RAINBOW PROMISE has an odd format. The cover blurb gives every indication that the story will be that of Julia and James (Luke's sister and her former lover) but in reality, this is a continuation of the love story of Luke and Sarah (the hero & heroine of The Rainbow Season).

In THE RAINBOW PROMISE, the love story of Julia and James takes a backseat to Luke and Sarah's. Although I felt the Julia/James story could have been very compelling and dramatic - the old-lovers-reunited-theme is one of my favorites - these characters weren't given their due.

The tragedies piled on Luke and Sarah didn't appeal to me, either. They'd both had enough hard luck in The Rainbow Season. If only Ms. Camp (aka Lisa Gregory) had restricted herself to just ONE conflict for Luke and Sarah, that would have been enough of a subplot. I also thought there were WAY too many descriptions of their sex life. Maybe if Luke and Sarah's story had been more restrained, the story of Julia and James could have taken center stage. Then they would have felt like a fully developed heroine and hero, instead of their being subcharacters to Luke & Sarah's continued lives and love story.

I didn't mind the smaller love story of Micah and Dovie, but there again, they have a story that deserves its own book. Micah, especially, had the potential to be a fine hero. A man who's half African-American, half Native American - fighting against the dangerous prejudices of the early 19th century; meeting a prickly but lovely young woman of color, who's had her own struggles to become educated and rise in the world... There are seeds of a great romance novel there, but their story isn't given that kind of treatment.

THE RAINBOW PROMISE has so many interesting, challenging plot twists but reading it was (for me) as if too many cooks were in the kitchen. Don't get me wrong, no one enjoys an in-depth romantic saga as much as I do, but in this case, I just wanted to read an in-depth romantic saga about Julia and James, not a continuation of Luke and Sarah's.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay Read, May 7 2009

This book can be thought of as a second installation in Luke and Sarah's story with Julia and James thrown in as side characters. Julia and James's did not make an appearance until page 16. Interspersed throughout the whole book was drama between Luke and Sarah's relationship in their married life and the novel even ended with a scene between Luke and Sarah. Although the author did have a happy ending for Julia and James, it was still came 20 pages earlier than the ending of the novel. So if you want to know what went on between Luke and Sarah after Rainbow Season, read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caution...this is a sequel and is not a "stand alone"!, Nov 12 2009

If you are reading this review and have not read A Rainbow Season.....stop right now! Go to your cart, add both this book and The Rainbow Season to it, and get prepared for a reading experience of a lifetime. These books are just that good. If this book is read without the back story of the Rainbow Season, you will be very sorry, as the couple on the front cover of The Rainbow Promise plays a very "secondary" role to Luke and Sarah (who's story was told in The Rainbow Season).

With all that being said, I can say without hesitation that this set of books should be required reading for all romance fans. I always try to think what are the "top romances of all time"......this series deserves a spot on that list!

The Rainbow Promise starts off about 2 years after The Rainbow Season ends. It is advertised as a romance between Julia, Luke's sister, and the town doctor whom Julia loved as a youth. While their story is told, it pales in comparison to the continuing story of Luke and Sarah. This couple is so unforgettable and epic that they have the tendency to "steal the show" whenever they are close to one another (which in this book is quite a bit.) If you've read and loved The Rainbow Season, this will not bother you in the slightest as you will be so relieved to catch up with Luke and Sarah.

Actually this book pulls off three separate love stories....told back and forth throughout the book. Some authors struggle with their attempts at this, but not Lisa Gregory. She flawlessly gives us enough of each story to make each unique and worthy in it's own right.

Please take the time to read both of these books......you will not forget these characters!
