Elliot Grove uses a hands-on approach to screenwriting based on his many years experience teaching the subject for Raindance training. He uses step-by-step processes illustrated with diagrams and charts to lend a visual structure to the teaching. Techniques are related to real-life examples throughout, from low budget to blockbuster films. The accompanying CD-ROM contains interviews with British directors, producers and writers. It also contains sample scripts and legal contracts, a writing exercise illustrated with a video clip, a folder full of useful hyperlinks for research, and a demo version of Final Draft screenwriting software.

The CD-ROM contains interviews with British directors Declan Lowney (Father Ted), Gillies Mackinnon (Redemption, Hideous Kinky), Pawel Pawlikowski (The Last Resort), producers Nik Powell (The Crying Game) and Norma Heyman (Dangerous Liaisons, Mary Reilly) and writer Andrew Shea (The Corndog Man)

The CD also contains sample scripts and legal contracts, a writing exercise illustrated with a video clip, a folder full of useful hyperlinks for research, and a demo version of Final Draft screenwriting software.

He teaches professional scriptwriting and lo-to-no budget courses as well as the weekend master-class, `Write the Hot Script' in London and overseas. Many of Elliot's former students have gone on to make commercially successful films (including Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels!). Elliot has produced 3 features and over 50 short films .

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any screenwriter Jan 2 2006
Format:Paperback
I haven't attended the Writer's Lab in person, but the book is first rate. You will learn a number of great tools to spark and nurture creativity, how to make your screenplay better, and, most importantly, how to get into the industry without an agent or any prior experience. I am using this book to develop a growing number of screenplays I have written, and I can see an improvement from my earlier works. I think this book is particularly useful for writers who have to juggle a day job, family time, and other demands because it has made me make more efficient use of my writing time as well.
The business aspects of writing are well done here, too, and are applicable not only to the British and American industries but also the Canadian and probably most of the rest of the world, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent creative and business book Nov 8 2005
Format:Paperback
I recommend this book to anyone contemplating a career as a screenwriter. The early chapters deal with ideas, character, story, and finding those things when they don't arrive on their own. The book then goes on to cover the business aspects of selling your screenplay, and it is as essential as the first half. Just reading this book will get you fired up to write something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling, informative, irreverent and funny! July 3 2002
Format:Paperback
So you want to be a Screenwriter? Then read this book!
From the striking cover in this book shines. Elliot's style is at once friendly, knowledgeable, sharp and funny. He shoots from the hip and speaks from the heart.

Ever wanted to hurl your script in sheer frustration? Well this concisely written and considered tome will at first agree with you; then it will point out just where you have gone wrong, and show you how to fix it, quickly and effectively. Every chapter is filled with apt hints and points that really grab your attention and get you thinking.

If you've read Campbell and Vogler and come away confused and dismayed as to how to do archetypes! Then let Elliot calmly lead you through integrating them into the tight mechanics of the Profesional Screenplay.
