Book Description

Jerry Belanger's indispensable guidance for goat owners continues in a revised edition of his popular handbook, RAISING MILK GOATS THE MODERN WAY. It includes more information about diseases and medication, new breed information, barn plans, recipes for goat milk products, and more. Belanger's reassuring, often humorous style makes reading about goats almost as much fun as raising them.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, Dec 18 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Raising Milk Goats Modern Way (Paperback)
I have read several books on the subject of goats, and this is my least favorite. I prefer to raise animals in a manner that is (reasonably) close to the animal's natural way of life (eg. "yard chickens"). It seems that this book recommends a very unnatural and expensive method of caring for goats. I am not an animal rights activist, I don't have any problem with slaughtering animals for food as an example, but the animals I slaughter will be as well cared for as possible, including having room for exercise, and a chance to eat natural foods (brush, grass, etc.)

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book!, Feb 18 1999
By Chris Hedemark (chris@yonderway.com) - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Raising Milk Goats Modern Way (Paperback)
Belanger's book covers dairy goat management from the perspective of the small farmer or homesteader. Most issues of dairy goat husbandry and management are well covered, but admittedly the book is missing out on veterinary information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, easy to read book for the beginner, Sep 17 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Raising Milk Goats Modern Way (Paperback)
Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way was the perfect introduction to goat care. The author shares his own personal experiences in raising goats. He covers everything from selecting your goat, kidding and the physiology of goats including the structure of the mammary system. It is easy to access information quickly as a reference, but the book is also enjoyable to read from cover to cover because of the author's humorous and candid style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best How To for Goats, Jun 22 2001
By Charles R. Nauert "Mahatma Randy" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Raising Milk Goats Modern Way (Paperback)
I bought this book back in '70's and found it indispensable. I've raised many goats and run a goat dairy here in Malibu... made tons of cheese and had much pleasure from my animals.

I subscribed to Jerry's Magazine Countryside and even had the volumes bound!

His book Raising the Homestead Hog is a natural companion to the Goat book. If you are successful with the goats, you'll be wanting the hog to soak up all that whey from making cheese. Then, the first crisp day of fall you can slaughter the hog, render the lard and make cinnamon donuts!

There's nothing as rewarding as having everything complete the circle of homestead activities! I love the way he writes.
