Dave Purcell's life is at an impasse. His marriage has failed, his restaurant's going bankrupt, and his optimism is being crushed by the weight of his own apathy. One of the only bright spots in his world comes in the form of Phonce, a fellow Newfie. Living the life of a true eccentric, Phonce fills his days with invention and his nights with conspiracy theories. In an attempt to bring business back to Dave's flailing fine dining establishment, he and Phonce start a rumour that an extinct breed of duck was seen on the bluffs just behind the restaurant. The plan works--only too well.

Rare Birds is charming on many levels. The Newfoundland location is a perfect spot for sweeping shots and a sense of endless grey seas; the quirky East Coast landscape is exaggerated to the point of a good belly laugh. Director Sturla Gunnarsson (The Beachcombers) has a great eye for detail and subtleties, making this both a whimsical and beautiful flick. Rare Birds was nominated for five Genie Awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars A pure delight ....., Dec 1 2003

This review is from: Rare Birds (DVD)
I came upon this little jewell on the recommendation of a friend and last night, Thanksgiving weekend, the whole family sat down and chuckled through the WHOLE film ... To have the whole group finish a complete film is amazing in itself ... since it's either the young ones or the old ones get bored half way through most of today's movie fave and slip out of the room...

The movie deals with the owner of a falgging sea coast resaurant, Dave (William Hurt) bemoaning to his neighbour, Phonce (Andy Jones) that he will have to close the place and move back to the city since his nuveau cuisine restaurant idea wasn't too polular at all. Course our whacky neighbour friend not only helps Dave concoct a wild story about and spotting extinct bird near the restaurant but then also takes our reluctant hero on a roller coaster ride adventure that includes secret lights, drugs, submarines, Winnebago spies, love .....

Oh yes, Molly Parker plays Phonce's the young sister in law Alice, who is visiting while wating for a scholarship, offering the shy hero of our movie an addeed dimension in this super great story ....

Definitely put this DVD on your list of movies your whole family will enjoy ... and in todays market of Matrixced out fare you will see this film over and over again ..

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, April 30 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Rare Birds (DVD)
Unlike Shipping News, this movie shows Newfoundlanders for what they are - quirky, funny and lovable.

Not the usual plot, this story all takes place around a wooden bird and the hilarity that ensues when this bird (previously believed to be extinct) is spotted.

I couldn't stop laughing the whole time! If you enjoyed the original Austin Powers or Waking Ned Devine you will love the humor in this book turned movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canadian Hit!, Feb 6 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Rare Birds (DVD)
This movie was truly Canadian, with the filming based out of Newfoundland. The storyline was humorous, yet it was easy to get wrapped up in the drama as it unfolded. The acting was first rate. This movie is a must see - Canadian classic.
