Book Description

This guide provides concise, interesting and practical details on uncommon gems that are now being used by designers to create distinctive jewelry. It not only lists the identification properties of the gems, but tells you where they are found, how they are used, why they are unique, how they are priced, and how to care for them. Review

Rare Gemstones is a fascinating insight into the latest and more unusual gemstones that are now finding their way into designer jewellery. The book covers rare gems that are mounted in jewellery, as well as some that are used only very occasionally, based on the opinions and usage of a range of jewellers. From their suggestions, over 60 of the lesser-used gem materials have been selected, documented and presented in a highly visual way. In total, the information given in this book is very well presented, easily readable and accurate, ensuring an excellent point of reference in an area all too often overlooked. Whether a newcomer to the world of gemmology or an experienced collector, this volume has something for everyone, and is highly recommended. - Gems & Jewellery, Spring 2012 I wish all of the books that appraisers need to keep on our reference shelves were just like this one. Rare Gemstones, How to Identify Evaluate and Care for Unusual Gems is a treasure. Like all of Renee Newman's books, it is impeccably organized, beautiful and complete. I recommend that all appraisers buy this book. Become familiar with it. When you need it, the information will be on your bookshelf ready to help you figure out that rare stone, or explain it to your client. Everyone wins. - Reviewed by Kim Piracci, GG Reviewed in Antique & Collectors Trader August 2012 - and in Antiques Info magazine, Sept/Oct 2012. 5.0 out of 5 stars Final volume in a three volume series: a must have to complete Jan 8 2013

I had purchased and read Newman's Exotic Gems volumes one and two. But as a gemstone fancier, easily transfixed by the Crown Jewels to modern designer pieces, I realized that there were some gems missing.
In Rare Gemstones, Newman finishes her study of gemstones. In this volume she includes the rarer, more contemporary gemstones gaining popularity. The full color illustrations range from raw crystals, to cut faceted stones, and to finished jewelry using these gems.
This is not only a guide for amateur gemologists but for jewelry fans. Just the photographs alone make it difficult to put down as you covet the beautiful gems. Each gem has a chapter headed by scientific facts followed by additional information on mines, qualities, uses, quickly followed by the illustrations. The book is easy to use with a table of contents and an index, as well as appendices. Further information on other books available from the publisher on the topic are also given if you want to expand your library.
I have purchased a variety of gem guides and this series by Renee Newman is my favorite.
