Product Description

From Amazon.com

"Anywhere you go in this city, you're only about five feet from a rat." These reassuring words set the tone for The Rats, a cheesy 2002 TV movie with a rather fun attitude toward its icky subject. The furry creatures are overrunning a Manhattan department store, with only store manager Mädchen Amick and exterminator Vincent Spano standing between the city and the establishment of a full-scale rodent kingdom. What takes this movie way beyond Willard is the CGI paint box, which brings scenes--many, many scenes--of swarming rats: rats filling a children's swimming pool, rats dropping onto a subway car, rats teeming over unfortunate extras. The movie isn't top-drawer in budget or anything else, but it seems aware of the 1950s monster-movie spirit, and the rat-cam and nibbling sound effects are unleashed with glee. It might make you think twice about lifting that toilet lid. --Robert Horton

Additional Features

A DVD featurette reveals the secrets behind working with rats in movies, with a rodent wrangler demonstrating the tricks of the trade (peanut butter is key). A bit player's discomfort at being covered with rats--hey, it's still showbiz, right?--makes this a fitting addition to the disc. --Robert Horton

5.0 out of 5 stars NIBBLES AND BITS, April 24 2004

THE RATS is the best of the many rat horror films we've been "blessed with."..and mainly because instead of trying to make the rats gigantic or monster like, this movie just used large rats to cause the kind of uneasy panic that we had with JAWS and THE BIRDS. There are some really disturbing scenes with these huge rat infestations, and for a t.v. movie, the CGI effects were done very well. The DVD also includes an "Animal Channel" spot showing how the rats were trained to crawl all over the subway train driver.
Madchen Amick, such a beautiful young lady, and ruggedly handsome Vincent Spano, both do a commendable job and they're highly likeable. The little girl, too, is not your typical "aw, mommy, don't get a new daddy" brat.
And yes, Ms. Amick did come out a winner in the finale, but maybe she wasn't wearing the right kind of cologne?
I liked this movie...it's fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly good!, Jan 24 2004
This review is from: Rats (Widescreen) (DVD)
When I saw this movie I thought, Oh great, another low bugdet, lameo B-movie, but it turned out to be great Scifi. The acting was great too, but you have to give credit to those rats, and you never know if some science experiment can actually go wrong, especially in a place like New York. Hey ya never know.

When a customer is strangely bitten in Garsons local department store, Susan Costello (highly underrated Madchen Amick) the head of relations, starts to worry. Rats have been overpowering the city in ways people can barely escape surviving the horrific attacks. Rats infest the rec center pool where Susans daughter swims, people have been killed by the little terrors, and the rats seem to be leaving their little presents all over Garsons. With little time left to destroy these Rats from reproducing, Susan calls in Rodent specialist Jack Carver (Vincent Spano) and his assistant Ty to help sort out the mess. As things grow worse and the Rats grow more powerful, they know they must think of a way to destroy them and quick.

The acting was great as I said before. Vincent Spano was good as the Rats expert. Haven't seen him in a while. Madchen Amick was beautiful. For the credit she should get, she's a highly underrated star. This is definetely a movie that would catch your interest. It keeps pace, and even gives you an ominous ending. 5 stars for a great movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mutant Rats on The Rampage!, Jan 12 2004

I rented this on VHS while staying at a friends house (in addition to Crocodile 2: Death Swamp, that one was great, too), and thought it was one the best "creature features" I had seen in a long, long time. THE RATS should've won an award of some kind! Why? Because the storyline is very believable, the actors are Oscar worthy, the rat affects are the most realistic of any beast attack film I've yet to see, it's the best Man vs. Nature tale since ARACHNOPHOBIA, and it's even better than DEEP BLUE SEA!!!!!!!!!!!
5 STARS FOR THE RATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
