Product Description

Quill & Quire

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: pretty, smart, thoughtful girl meets older, beautiful, preternaturally graceful boy. Cue sparks and adolescent sexual tension. Then the boy reveals The Secret: he’s actually immortal. Cue internal conflict as girl wrestles with her desire to be with boy …  forever. With a broad-stroke summary such as this, it’s easy to be cynical about Raven, the new novel from Ottawa writer and teacher Allison Van Diepen (author of Snitch and Street Pharm). Raven, however, is far from being a lame Twilight cash-in (despite the cover design). It’s a thoughtful, well-written, unusually compelling novel – one that, yes, will appeal to fans of Stephenie Meyer. Nicole lives with her mom and dad in Brooklyn. She’s a good student who works a couple of nights a week at Evermore, a club in Manhattan. She also dances with a squad, engaging in hip-hop break battles with other dance crews. Zin, the leader of her squad, is  brooding, mysterious, and beautiful. After he rescues Nicole from a mugger, Zin reveals his secret: he was brought back from the brink of death 200 years earlier by an ancient spell wielded by Carlos, who owns Evermore. There are several drawbacks to immortality, not the least of which is the fact that Zin’s immortal “family” is being hunted. Despite the high-concept and potentially histrionic conceit, Raven is actually a thoughtful, skilled work, drawing readers in with its careful attention to characters and the weighty moral questions they face. Diepen writes with a light touch, even when dealing with the novel’s more difficult material, such as the fate of Nicole’s older brother, a promising student who developed a drug addiction during his first year of college. Diepen masters both the realistic side of Nicole’s domestic life and her involvement with the family at Evermore, and is comfortable with both the patois of urban youth and deeper philosophical conversations. Raven is a more-than-worthwhile read, and a solid answer to the inevitable question, “What should I read after Twilight?” --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Book Description

She wants him€¦.

Zin dances with fire in every step; speaks with a honey sweet voice; and sees with eyes that can peer into your soul. Nicole's friendship with him is the only thing that saves her from the boredom of school and the turmoil of her family life. It's no wonder why Nicole is madly in love with him. But she can't understand why he keeps her at a distance, even though she can feel his soul reaching out for hers.

Zin is like no man Nicole has ever met, and he carries with him a very old secret. When Nicole uncovers the truth, her love may be the only thing that can save him from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been A Long Time Since I Read Something This Good, July 20 2009
This review is from: Raven (Hardcover)
Read this all in one sitting. So glad I bought this, I love young adult fantasy but I have been getting really sick of all the twilight themed books that have been coming out. This is something entirely different and it's about time! Normally I prefer 3rd person and sometimes I find reading from one person pov can get annoying after a while but this didn't have that affect, it's written in first person from Nicole's POV. I really liked the ending, and I'm glad it didn't have the same typical endings that the vampire romances usually have. Two thumbs up for this one.

I HATED this book. The story line was pointless. Her brother, who I think we are supposed to feel sorry for (?), is a huge pain. The relationships in the book, ALL of them are horrible. I didn't find Raven and Zin believable at all. The plot and character development was horrendous. I wouldn't read this book again, nor would I read a sequel if there ever was one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Jun 4 2009
This review is from: Raven (Hardcover)
Nicole has a life blighted by her brother, a meth addict who routinely calls home for money her parents can't refuse him. She just wants to get out. Her only respite comes in the form of Evermore, a bar in Manhattan where she can indulge her two loves: breaking, and Zin, a charismatic bartender.

Nicole just wants to be with Zin, but little does she know there is a dark secret he hides. When she uncovers it, will Nicole's love for Zin survive? And when a dark force connected to Zin begins to threaten her, what will she choose?

RAVEN is an engaging, fast-paced read. The voice of the narrator, Nicole, is sharp and clear. Readers will be drawn into this fascinating new world of breaking, but for newcomers to the dance, it will be at times difficult to understand and visualize.

For me, the climax of RAVEN came far too abruptly. The book seemed to be building toward an ending that never came, and that which finally did appear seemed out of the blue.

Still, RAVEN remains an engaging read regardless of this inconsistency in plot construction, mostly due to the captivating voice that narrates the book. Van Diepen is to be congratulated for her excellent imagination and tone.
