She resides on the southern Scottish border, within Saint Christopher's Abbey. Captain Edward Asher of the King's Royal Army and his men have guarded Davina for several years now. But somehow, someone has learned of Davina's existence and wants her dead. Robert "Rob" MacGregor is the first born son of the powerful Scottish laird, Callum. His small group reaches the abbey to find it under attack. He vows to Captain Asher that he will rescue Davina and take her to safety. Soon Rob realizes he cannot stand the thought of being parted from the lady. With Davina's enemies on their trail, Rob must choose between all he holds dear and the brave young woman he cannot resist. ***** FIVE STARS! Author Paula Quinn keeps events as close to true history as possible. Set during one of England's more bloody eras, I found myself amazed at how smoothly these characters seemed to fit right in. A muddle of fact and romance,

I expected to like this book better than I did. None of the characters come to life in this book. It does sweep the reader across Scotland and up to the mountains and crags of Skye. It places the fictional hero and heroine on the cross roads of an interesting part of English history, when the religion of the various Stuart kings was reason for murder, execution and intrigue.
James 11, a secret Catholic, hides his first born daughter away and raised his other daughters, Anne and Mary, as Lutherans, marrying them off to protestant royalty. William of Orange, husband to Mary, wants the English throne. James hopes to gain the throne when his brother Charles 11 dies and then bring his secret Catholic eldest daughter, a fictional character, to court and eventually place her on the throne. William plots with various other Dutch and English Protestants to murder the daughter so he and Mary can claim the throne. Of course, Charles, James, William and Mary are all historical figures. William and Mary did rule England, as did Anne. Davina, the Catholic daughter and Rob, the Scottish warrior who saves, beds and weds her, are fiction. Unfortunately the historical characters were much more interesting to me than the gorgeous, hotblooded and heroic fictional ones...which meant the story in this book seemed silly and I wanted to spend time reading more about English history.

I like it when a romance book has the right amount of story and romance. Paula Quinn is wonderful at creating just the right balance!! I absolutely loved this book...so much so that I read it in one day! This is one of those books that you can read over and over again, and not tire of it. I have just become a HUGE fan of Paula Quinn!
