About the Author

Mike Snyder is the president of TheRawDiet.com and an expert on vegetarian and vegan raw foods nutrition. He has been active in the raw foods community for more than ten years. He has studied with Viktoras Kulvinskas, the founder of the modern raw foods movement, and with Gabriel Cousens, one of its best-known proponents. As a health coach, Snyder assists clients worldwide in transitioning to raw foods. He provides keynote addresses and presentations, food prep demonstrations, seminars, and teleseminars across the country. He recently co-authored The Everything(R) Raw Foods Recipe Book. He lives in Portland, OR.

I'm hesitant to review this, because I am sure the right person will enjoy this book. However, I think it is useful to know when a book contains recipes that include numerous ingredients that are not common or may be difficult to find, depending on where you live. I've been eating purely vegetarian for many years, and recently have started experimenting a bit with blending and raw food in general. This book is, in my opinion, for raw foodists with time to prepare fairly detailed - in some instances fairly time consuming - recipes. For example, the hummus recipe includes pre-sprouting garbanzo beans. You also need to be willing to buy numerous non-traditional ingredients or search for substitutes. I am willing to skip steps I do not have time for, but I'm not interested in building a pantry of exotic ingredients. Then again, experienced raw food folks and people with lots of time to experiment may enjoy this book. There is an appropriate audience for it and I do believe the author has a substantial amount of knowledge about their subject. Unfortunately, this is not what I was looking for and I'm sending my copy back.

I SO wanted to love this book. One of the recipe developers is a blogger I love, this book had been on my Wish List for ages because of that. When I finally got it and started checking out recipes, I was disappointed. For one thing, this is absolutely the kind of book that makes raw food feel inaccessible. There is a ton of prep involved in most of these recipes. The ones I have tried have been hit or miss. Some of them are great, others are either not, or are so ho-hum that I wondered why they were included. Instead of being so comprehensive, I wish this book had been smaller, a collection of the best of the bunch. Also, more pictures! Only a handful of the recipes had pictures, all of them lumped together in the middle of the book so you have to hunt around to find the corresponding recipe.

All in all, this may be appropriate for the hardcore raw foodist, but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

I purchased this book last year. I knew I wasn't ready for it at that time, but was going in that direction. I found it intimidating at first, particularly because of the multiple steps needed to make some of the recipes. I've made many of the juices, which are lovely. I've made the Tasty Toast which was a long process but totally worth it. Soaking nuts is new for me, as is working with Irish Moss. I enjoyed the adventure. I've made many of the salads and the Magical Mushroom Pâté is a favorite now.
One slightly annoying part of the book, and the reason it didn't get 5 stars, is that to make one recipe, you are often having to find other recipes in different sections of the book. For example, to make Tasty Toast, I had to make Irish Moss Paste. I'm sent to Chapter 14. I would have liked at the very least a page number.

I adapt alot of my recipes from Rawesomely Vegan written by Mike Snyder, his recipes followed to the word turn out amazing, this guy really knows his flavors, but depending what I already have in the pantry they adapt pretty well too.
I couldn't recommend another raw-vegan book over this one- it really takes the cake.

I had a quick look at the reviews on amazon, and I am really surprised by some of the negative commentary here. I am not sure where that all is coming from, but it appears to me to be far from correct. Very strange.
The foods suggested in the recipes are very easy to find, even here in Australia, also there are endless suppliers of all sorts of products online now. So really, I would not see how anyone would have a problem sourcing the ingredients suggested.
Additionally, his recipes are very, very easy to follow, he truly takes the complication out of the more challenging raw food preparations, with minimal precise instructions.
I wholeheartedly believe this recipe index is a necessity for any raw food kitchen, alongside other leading raw-vegan specialists. Mike should really be proud of that!

I really enjoy the recipes in this book. The author explains all the procedures well and even teaches you how to sprout your own seeds. I'm normally just vegan, but the raw vegan foods are the ones that really make me feel best. I would recommend this to anyone looking to super-charge their vegan diet.
